Barbara's Story

Okay, so you want a little history? Wow!! This past Memorial Day weekend I found out how some classmates remember me...and yes, I was surprised. One even thought I was "quiet" - another squealed at that idea!! I began college about 3 weeks after graduation, then worked and went to school; married/moved to FL for the next 20 years (BA/Accounting); had one son; divorced and moved to AR!! Yea, that was a cultural SHOCK! Met and married a guy from CA; moved to LA where I returned to school for Psych and Healthcare Finance. (Here we go again)...divorced and moved to TN. Oh, let's just say, I liked divorce so much I did it again!!! Met the love of my life in TN (he's from AR); we married 17 years ago and lived in MS (surprise!!) just across the TN border at Memphis. There I upgraded my interest in politics..and served on the city council for 8 years. During that time my love was diagnosed with cancer. We began traveling to Houston for stem cell transplant (1998) and treatment since. After a 13-month stay in 03&04 we decided to buy a home here and return behind the Mayflower Van. We already had many friends in the area so it was more like coming ...Expand for more
home than moving to a new city! I retired in June, 2002, and finished my court cases in December. Yes, I miss my career to this day - but I LOVE not setting an alarm clock and everyday can be Saturday if I so wish!! I've donated time to help M.D.Anderson Cancer Center fight for patients' benefits with Medicare (my field of work), and of course, we spend a lot of time there anyway! Along the way, I became a grandmother to twin girls (now 18) and a wonderful grandson (age 12). The sad part is they live in Florida, and we don't get to see them very often due to my husband's illness. He's doing rather well; has chemo, etc. to stay in remission (Myeloma: bone marrow cancer), which is incurable but with God's Grace and prayers from many people we have a very good life. Please keep us in your prayers. Chairing the 2008 50th high school graduation anniversary for my class gave me the opportunity to contact many people I'd not heard from or of for 50 years. Thank you for giving me many months of fond memories - and whether you made it to the reunion or not - you gave me a reunion with those wonderful memories. May 2009 be a great year for all of us!
