Barbara's Story

Life My husband, Robbie, and I have been living in Florida since 1990. I am still teaching and doing my Art in Ft. Lauderdale at Pine Crest College Preparatory School (and probably will be doing so until it is no longer fun). I teach drawing and painting, AP Studio Art, and also became the Upper School Visual Arts Department Chair the beginning of the 2006-07 school year. After teaching 25 years, I finally received recognition for the fruits of my labor by being named the recipient of the Linnell Award in 2004, which is the equivalent of teacher of the year at Pine Crest School. Although my husband, Robbie and I do not have children of our own, I enjoy being a mentor to many bright students who have gone on to major colleges throughout the U.S. It is heartwarming that they still come back to visit me at school and home. We have three Seal Point Siamese cats, Angel (5), Beau (4), and MiMi (1) whom we consider to be our children. We live in a townhouse on the 13th hole of a golf course, which has proved to be a lucky number for us. I still keep up with Donna Jo Yelverton (her sister, Gail, married my brother, Terry), and I see her everytime we go home to MS to visit. My husband, Robbie and I like to go to Nascar races, and even meet my brother, Terry and Gail at a couple of races a year. You should see Gail and I with our headsets on and listening to Tony Stewart talk to his pit crew!!! If anyone is living in the South Florida area or enjoy Nascar racing, let me know. Also, if you are ever vacationing in the area, let us know. I would love to visit with you!! _ Babs School My biggest crushes continued from junior high....always on Leonard Roberts and ...Expand for more
Alvin Rochelle, but we were just great friends...... Surfing on the first skate boards down "Surf Hill" with Donna Jo Yelverton and Darlene Dyar on weekends, before they built houses on the street. The teacher that inspired me most was my history teacher, Mrs. Williams, but that was my sophomore year at Provine. I guess I should have said Mrs. Sims, my art teacher during my junior and my senior years at Wingfield, but I know that my passion for drawing and painting was the reason I took her class for two years. Robin Church and I nearly drove her crazy TALKING AND LAUGHING incessantly!! I remember riding to school with Harry Keen and my brother, Doug, and if we arrived a few minutes late and all the good parking places were taken, we had to park in the woods!!! I remember teasing damp hair after p.e. class, and spraying it with tons of hair spray!!! I'll never forget when Brenda Conlee (who passed away in 1973), my best friend and a hairdresser, cut my hair during my senior year in a style called "The New Yorker", and within a couple of weeks, nearly every girl in my class had their hair cut the same way!!! I remember wanting to paint on the old barn that each class would paint their class year on at the beginning of the year (but was too chicken to do it) Military Thank goodness, I did not have to do the military thing.....My oldest brother, Glen, joined the Air National Guard before he was drafted, and did not have to go to Vietnam like so many others. Terry was at Hinds Jr. College, making good grades in electrical engineering, and my youngest brother, Doug, was still at Wingfield when the draft was in effect. So, we were all lucky in this respect.
