Barry's Story
Who is that guy in the mirror, anyway? You know, the one with wrinkles and grey hair. Oh...Thankfully, the changes come gradually ;). But you know - the same on the inside...sometimes, I think I haven't changed a lot since way back when... It's a long way from those high school days and my memories of those days are kind of sparse. Now, I'm thinking these are the best days of my life; I'm sure that back then in 1965, I thought that those were.
Some of my past lives included:
caddying, potato picking, septic tank pumping, fence installation, sewer line hook-ups,construction labor, roofing, college student, selling Fuller Brush products, factory worker, painting houses, warehouse worker, body guard for Paul Newman (CT politics),retail, management trainee, store manager, summer youth employment counselor, employment training specialist, job coach, job developer,
poet, and high school special ed teacher. Some of the work experiences I've had were very brief (Paul Newman's bodyguard for 3 hours and factory worker for 6 days), while just a few of the others had the longest duration - Sears warehouse worker for 4 years to help put myself through college; painting houses for 7 years; retail management for 10 years; and, teaching for 22 years. The last 22 years also included being a job trainer/coach and developing jobs for students with disabilities.
I was a high school special education teacher in Middlebury, VT. for 22 years. I retired in June 2010. I 've looked forward to retirement for a long time but, I will miss my students - they have kept me feeling young even though one or two of them called me "old man." They made my career fulfilling and worthwhile. I'm not sure what the future will bring in the coming years; I hope to kee...Expand for more
p writing poetry, selling on eBay, running, possibly volunteering somewhere and traveling with Debbie.
Debbie and I got married in Vermont in 1988. We met in 1966 at Misquamicut, RI. Both of us led other lives for 20 years before finding each other again. During that time I lived in Connecticut, New York, California, Massachusetts and South Carolina. We live in our 160 year old farm house near Middlebury. Our most recent travels took us to Ireland two times. Most recently, in June & July 2011, we finally made it to Italy. We spent 15 great days in Florence and traveled throughout Tuscany by train & bus. Also, made it to Cinque Terre & Venice. Can't wait to go again!
Throughout the years since college I have been writing poetry, actually since 1966; it has been a constant in my life. My poetry continues to evolve and to hold me together. You can read a few of my poems right here - on my Bulletin Board (more on Facebook).
I have been a runner for 30 years (about 31,000 miles). I have run 14 marathons - none since 1996, though. I continue to run 100 miles every month. January is the hardest month! February isn't much easier. I've now (March 2011) made it for 117 months in a row! My streak of 1oo miles per month ended with an injury in June. I'm working my way back up toward 100 miles again.
I also sell antiques and other unique things on eBay (ferrisburgh-antique-company).
Barack Obama's election was the greatest, most hopeful (public) event in my lifetime. "I believe that he will do great things for our country and the world" (10/30/11).
Visit me at Facebook, on the less-updated Myspace, on blogspot (you can find a link to my website on Facebook) and on eBay. Or, just Google Barry DeCarli; something will come up.
