Beatrice's Story

Life After graduating from high school, I continued working at the L.R.A.F.B. Youth Center. I worked there until Dec. 1994. I then moved to Missouri to be closer to my family, who after my dad retired from the Air Force moved to Missouri. I have continued living the same town that my parents live in. On May 1, 1999, I married Raymond Shaw. Ray and I divorced on August 19, 2005. He is in legal trouble and I wasn't about to stick around and have to deal with all that garbage. I still live in the same house but it seems awful big now that a husband and two teenagers are not living there. Things are getting better. College I am enjoying going to college. It's a little bit hard after being out of school for so long. Man! It's been 13 years since I have had to study, take notes, take tests, and sit in a classroom to listen to a lecture. I started back to school in January of 2004, it is a very good experience that I wish I would have pursued sooner. It has been a struggle at times to be able to juggle the job, the student, and the person so many people rely on for so many extra things. I seem to get distracted on other things that need to be done. I am pursuing a degree in either Elementary or Special Education. I have got a foot in the door, I was working at the elementary school and after two years in the elementary, I went and worked at high school here in Richland, MO. I can tell you one thing it did not bother me one bit to walk in the door and begin working in the elementary it was a little overwelming going to the high school level. Only thing I can say is I am really enjoying the experience of going to college even after all these years. This experience has shown me that I can continue with my college and go on to do what I want to do with my degree. Workplace Before graduating from high school I was employed at L.R.A.F.B. Youth Center. I remained working there until Dec. 1993. I then moved to Richland, Mo. I was employed at a daycare center called Richland Academy, after two years of working there I took a second job working for the local Head Start. I qu...Expand for more
it the daycare after a year of working two jobs, it was just too much working two jobs involving children. I then left Head Start and went to retail. I worked for S.A.S. Factory Shoe Store for five great years. I really enjoyed the experience and really liked all of my return costumers that would come in and wait to be waited on by me. They came in knowing that most of the time I would remember their size and be willing to work and spend as much time with them as they needed. I have since left that job and am enjoying being back in with children once again. I worked for Richland Elementary School, were I worked with the mentally and severly handicapped, I had so much fun with these children and got a new challenge from them every single day. I worked at this job for 3 years and loved it!! Took a BIG leep the last school year and worked at the jr. high/high school. I always thought it was the teachers that were a pain in my neck in high school, boy did I get a reality check. I see some of the things these young people do that I did and got in trouble for and I have to get on to them about those things. There were days, I had to laugh because of the things that I see and hear at school. There is never a boring moment and every single day is a brand new day. I was really worried when I was informed that the program of the students I worked directly with was being moved to the high school because they are all teenagers and needed to be with the peers of their own age. I was just thinking that I was not ready to go to that level, but I really enjoyed the change and can say I really liked the kids and staff there. I just couldn't imagine going to another job, especially if it were a job not working with children. Well I have gone on to a new job, back to retail. I am working at the Dollar Tree. I enjoy it but it is certainly not enough money or hours. Have worked for the Dollar Tree for a year and a half. I started working for the Swedeborg School in Sept. 2007-May 2008 and really enjoyed it. Now I am back to just working one job, but I am going to college at night.
