beau's Story
After graduating from Wilson, I became a Naval Cadet at the University of Colorado in Boulder. By the end of 1968, I had developed a temporary medical condition that prevented me from serving in the Navy. Army did not want me either so in 1969, I grew my hair down to the middle of my back andI became a hippy freak guitar player and lead singer of a group that recorded with Capital Records. Our management group said my name (Bruce) didn't cut it so all of a sudden I became Beau Johnson - and it stuck. About the same time, my parents divorced and my mother moved to Newport Beach with my younger sister. Mom spent 27 years on the North Bayfront of Balboa Island. Those years and that place hold my fondest memories of Southern California.
In 1970, I married Sue Lennert (Poly Class of 1966) and after 43 years together, she still takes my breath away. Sue grew up in the entertainment indsutry and eventually became the chick singer in our group. Based out of Las Vegas, we traveled extensively for four years. Like a lot of one hit wonders,we had to figure out what we really wanted to be when we grew up. We relocated to Dallas in 1981 ...Expand for more
to pursue a career in oil and gas exploration and development. We established several related companies that we sold in 1986. I then got involved in investment banking, financial publishing and internatiional institutional money management. In1999, I was a senior member of the founders group that set up a robust financial publishing platform that continues to deliver solid macroeconomic and geopolitical content to over 1.5 million subscribers on four continents. In 2002 I founded Chinamerica Fund, one of the first private equity funds to invest exclusively in the Peoples Republic of China. The fund had run its course by August of 2009 when Sue and I retired.
Sue and I have two fabulous sons and six grandchildren ranging in ages from 3 to 19. We all live within 10 minutes of each other and spend a lot of quality time together. I have two sisters that still live in California. My older sister is lives in Long Beach (Wilson class of 1964). My younger sister lives in Malibu Canyon and graduated from Newport High School. Mom is now here with me in Texas.
Life in Texas has been extremely good and we have been blessed abundantly.
