Ben Nuttall-Smith's Story
Life
Born on safari in Tanganyika Territory (now Tanzania) in 1933, I, Ben Nuttall-Smith, survived English boarding schools, the London blitz, doodle-bugs, and V2 rockets.
When my father was killed in North Africa, my mother remarried and my name was changed to Benoit Boucher.
In March 1945, I sailed with three younger sisters to Canada. En route, we witnessed one of Grand Admiral Donitz' last attempts to sink Allied convoys. At seventeen, I joined the Canadian Navy.
Later adventures and misadventures led to a lifetime vocation as a teacher of Music, Theatre, Art, and Language from 1958 until I retired in 1991.
Ten of those earliest teaching years were dedicated to a Catholic order as Brother Bonaventure. However, with increasing opposition from superiors to my involvement in the Arts, I grew disillusioned and left the order. Inevitably, I fell in love, married, and had children of my own.
Later, in 1982, I found my own father, alive and well in England and reclaimed my name Nuttall-Smith. But, a short time later, memories of childhood abuse returned, resulting in a breakdown, an end to my teaching career, and destruction of my marriage. Living on my ...Expand for more
own in the country, I remodelled a ÃÂhandyman's delight, built a garden, took up painting, and began writing. The long process of healing began as I faced my demons and, through therapy, learned to shed childhood guilt and shame.
I am an executive member of the Canadian Authors Association, 1st Vice President of the Federation of British Columbia Writers, Editorial Board member for the Canadian Poetry Association quarterly magazine Poemata and a member of the WritersÃÂ' Union of Canada.
Publications include an historical novel, Blood, Feathers and Holy Men, Libros Libertad, January 2011, my memoir, Secrets Kept / Secrets Told, Libros Libertad January 2012, Names and places have been changed but the story remains true. three books of poetry Word Painting, Splashes of Light and Scribbles from Afar, a 3500 word illustrated children'ÃÂs book Henry Hamster Esquire and an illustrated book of Haiku for children â Grandpa's Homestead.
