Bernadette's Story

Since leaving Forestburg in 1979, I moved to B C in 1979, got married in 1980, raised 2 wonderful children (have 5 beautiful grand children), separated in 1998 and divorced in 2002, entered college in 2003, moved to Ontario in 2004 graduated with a general office admin diploma in 2005 and legal admin in 2007. I got engaged in 2005 and broke it off in 2007. In 2008 I enrolled/entered university and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 2012, wrote and published my first book - Traveling Truths: Highway Memoirs in 2013. I was very excited and a bit nervous when the Forestburg Public Library invited me to come and do a book signing/reading session. However, having gone to Forestburg in 2009 for our 30 year class reunion and knowing that my high school best friend (Joyce) would be there as support, I felt fairly comfortable going back to Forestburg after all these years. From there I went to Calgary to visit my mom and sisters and was given the opportunity to share my first book, with the residents of Gilcrest Manor. Next stop was Port Hardy, BC where I did another book reading/signing which was held at North Coast Trail Backpacker's Hostel. One of the people who attended the Port Hardy event asked if I had ever thought about going overseas and including that in an observational book similar to Traveling Truths:Highway Memoirs. At the time of the BC reading/signing event, I did not know at the time I would be invited to be a speaker at the 2014 Indigenous Women's Conference in Cairns, Australia. My travels to Australia will be in book 3, which as of yet does not have title. I graduated with a Bachelors in Social Work in June 2014 and then July 7, 2014, I gained employed at the Indigenous Friendship Centre in a training position as a...Expand for more
n addictions counselor and as of September I am working in a temporary position as a Mental Health Worker at the Indigenous Friendship Centre. Australia was awesome...it was really cool to have the CEO of a company named The Replay Group offer me a job and have that CEO tell me the reason she was attending the conference was to hear my presentation. It was also really cool to be asked by the conference coordinators, to come back next year...Next October (2015) I will be speaking about a child who has been diagnosed with FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder). My daughter and a friend of hers joined me after the conference so we were able to take in some of the scenes in and around Cairns Australia. Next year we are planning to stay in Australia longer and perhaps go to New Zealand too. Ohhh and one more thing...lol...I have just been invited to speak in Illinois in May, 2015. This presentation will be about a man named Stanley...'Stanley I a Kind Man: Stanleys Journey'. Book 4 - Traveling Truths: Bussing 101 has now been started...This trip to and from Alberta/Ontario was extremely interesting...some of the people I met were strange, but most were incredibly nice. My next adventure is that of having an abstract accepted for a conference in Illinois. It looks like I will be speaking just south of Chicago in May and then back to Australia in the fall. The 11th Congress of Qualitative Inquiry Conference in Illinois was amazing...I met soooo many wonderful people from all over the world...and my book is now in Israel somewhere...lol...cant beat that..well not unless I was in Israel somewhere, but I was invited to go to Massachusetts and speak to a Masters Social Work class...me a lowly little Bachelors grad...wow More to be added later
