Bernadine's Story
I grew up in Brightmoor. I lived on Braile, Burt Rd., Patton, Westbrook, and finally Blackstone for the majority of my youth. I attended Shirley, Shirley Temp, Harding, Gompers, Burt, Christ the King, and Redford. I criss-crossed paths with many many people from Schoolcraft to Seven Mile and from Telegraph to Southfield. This included quite a few friends from the Ford High School neighborhood. I feel really blessed to have grown up with such a wide venue and all the incredible people/memories from the area. Brightmoor was like it's own little city. Right after graduation, I moved to Minnesota. Fell for a Vet coming back from Nam that lived there. Lived in Mpls. for about 4 years, and I can't tell you how many friends from Detroit managed to come visit! Moved back to MI and worked for Allstate for the next seven years. Met my husband of almost 30 years on a blind date. Turns out I had known him as a child from Stoepel Park and Harding, playing baseball! Fate! I left MI and moved to TN with my husband and two kids in 1984. Moved back to MI for a short time in 19...Expand for more
98, but moved back to TN again in 2004. It was a personal sabbatical - much needed.
I currently work in Home Health Care of the elderly. It is sometimes very difficult working with Alzheimer's a/o dementia patients. I get in at least 40 hours a week and wind up very tired! I've tried many avenues of employment, but I think my forte is still to be discovered.
Writing seems to be what I like best. I am looking forward to being able to "retire" from conventional employment and try to develop an income from a hobby - gardening. My husband Abe and I bought a used greenhouse (15 x 24) and are in the process of refurbishing it. It's a slow go sanding and priming the entire frame, but I look forward to seeing it up and running. I think being in that atmosphere is going to be delightful! I hope to be able to grow plants, heirloom veggies, etc...and sell enough to acquire some $$$ doing something I absolutely love...
My son(29) and his wife live nearby, and my daughter(26) is a massage therapist in Vail. No grandkids yet but I'm good with that for now ~ to be continued...!
