Bernard's Story
Life
Married for 25 years but divorced in 2009. I now live in the same town but I have moved on with my life. I now work for myself as a consultant to various businesses including hospitals. I still continue to do odd assignments for companies out of the US as well as work for my own company here in Canada. I improved my education with an MBA to go along with my CGA and my undergraduate degree. I enjoy my work and how it keeps me mentally sharp and aware of things around me. Life overall is good.
I have had a good life with 26 years of hockey refereeing but my knees told me they did not like it any more. I have officiated up to OHL but never skated well enough to go beyond that. I have been a corporate controller for 8 years before spending the last 20 as a Project Manager and Consultant to small and mid size business. You never know what you are going to face so each job is a challenge. I guess that is why I like this work.
My Kids
Both children have artistic talent definitely not from my side of the family. Both are average to a little above average in school. Both are very conservative in demeanor and outlook. Both have finished college and are working in the work a day world.
About Bernie
This is my tenth year since my cancer surgery. I have had three bouts of radiation therapy (no fun at all). It is a wake up call and I must say it forces you to look at life a little differently. I have recovered well from that. I have normal aches and pains considering the life I have led. I have gloucoma (inherited from Mom)normal knee problems (with all the sports I played)arm and shoulder (different arm and different shoulder)Other than that I feel terrific and carry on normally. My Job
My travel has cut down significantly the last two years. I still travel a bit going from Company to Company setting up restructuring and Tax Defense Work. I am a Managing Director for my own company and in that capacity the bulk of the work is going from hospital to hospital on HST work. I also do work for the Police in accounting fraud for court work. It is a very small part of my workload. In the US I supervise staff on various jobs until they are complete. I originate the plans for each client. I am considered a Tax Expert in both Canada and the USA as it applies to the small business owner. I tend to be very busy but have free weekends. I spend most of my time in Ontario now The company I work for is out of Cincinnati and they try to keep my busy but I am trying phase that work out as I work towards retirement. Working from home is more fun..
Workplace
For work I am a CGA with an executive MBA degree. Over the last 20 years I have worked on 950 plus businesses doing everything from Tax Work to a complete restructuring or revamping the business for sale. It is fun and challenging and you never really know what you are going to face until you get there. Each job runs from a few days up to 2 months and I am usually quite happy when I finish. I can be abrupt and forceful but my job is to make changes and to help whoever it is to improve their situations. You do not always win in this business but the victories are sweet and you really feel you have done something worthwhile. Some of my notable successes have been Wendy's, Tim Horton's, Old Dominion Freightliners, St. Lawrence Paperbox,, and several Publishing Houses including Blue Book, Harlequin Books, and Penguin Books. There have been many others but there alas have been some dismal failures usually attributable to bad chemistry and misunderstanding of my role in the company but alas, such is life.
