Betsy's Story

Life After spending 6.5 years in the Air Force, I have decided to come back to the Michigan to raise my son, Cody. I finished college with a BA in Family Life Education and currently work as a substance abuse counselor for a residential facility in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Yup! The great Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I am married to a guy from Litchfield, Bruce Huggett. I've been at the Men's New Hope House for almost three years now. I'm loving living in the UP but miss my family and friends a lot. I play volleyball for the Sault Ste. Marie City Rec League and hang out with my friends on Sugar Island, which happens to be where we live. I have to take a car ferry to work everyday. It's a pain in the butt sometimes but when the Great Lakes Freighters are cruising by, it can be really cool. This past winter I even rode my snowmobile to work because the snow was so deep I couldn't get out of my driveway any other way. Ahhh! Life in the UP! School I have a lot of great memories from LHS. Cheerleading was great. I will always remember with fondness, all of the hard work that went into everything we did. I was inspired to greatness by Mrs. Sykes and Mr. Newell. The funnest times of my life were shared with Liz, Danielle, Kelly, Michelle, and Krista. Hope everyone is doing great. Military I never dreamed in a million years that I would have ended up in the Air Force but I did. So many memories from Sgt Del Skinner and Sgt Jimmy Rabel in Ba...Expand for more
sic Training. Jimmy was real easy to look at!!! Singing karaoke at the Vandenburg Club with Shannon Miller, Shannon Ivey, and Darin Lightfoot was a real blast. Can't forget my first trip to New Orleans with Judy, David, Greg, and Janelle. How sick did I get? Thomas Patrick Benfield has some amazing vocal talent. Colby Louis McCoy Laviana has a heart the size of Texas. Ellsworth AFB SD is where I met my first husband and my son, Cody, was born. At Ellsworth were MSgt Schaber who was full of ... advice, Sgt Noelle, my sponsor, SrA Corder, TSgt Strausser, and all of the great people of 28th CS. Then DJ and I moved to Gunter Annex, AL and HQ SSG. I loved working with all the military personnel in the ADPE office, protocol office, and back to the ADPE office. Airman Leadership School was a blast. Whatever happened to Steve "Stoner" Stone? I would love to talk to him. I went to Saudi during my time at Gunter and unbelievably had a good time. Mattie, girl I hope you are doing good. Jason, Joel, Rick, and Kevin, thanks for making a girl feel like she's surrounded by family even when she's so far from home. Yes, folks, the military was one of the best periods of my life. Now I'm on to working with military members in the civilian sector. I've come to have a calling for working with veterans with PTSD and substance abuse problems. There is no greater clientèle to work with than those who have served our country. I will gladly give back.
