Betty's Story
Life
My husband Roger (Woodmancy) and I moved to Nashville, TN in 1995 and we love it here. We spend a lot of our free time going to live music shows (jazz, blues, r & b, bluegrass, classical).
I travel for my job about 70% of the time so I've been fortunate enough to see much of the U.S. over the past 10 years. We make it to Bentonville several times a year and I am always amazed at the changes (how DARE them change our square?!?).
My son, Adam Hight, and his wife Missi moved back to Bentonville last year. The ultimate joy of my life is shamelessly spoiling my 3 grandchildren every chance I get. Darbi is 8, Torin is 7, and Quinn is 3. I miss them desperately and eagerly anticipate every trip to spend time with them. Of course they're the most beautiful and smartest children ever born (no prejudice here!).
Workplace
After several jobs in Bentonville, including City Hall, Citizens Bank and the Bank of Bentonville, I ended up at Wal-Mart like almost everyone else.
After managing the Wal-Mart travel department for 3 years I had the opportunity to become a buyer. One of the categories I was responsible for was books and I absolutely fell in love with the book industry. After a...Expand for more
couple of years on the Wal-Mart side, I went across the street to be the book buyer for Sam's.
Five years later I decided to move into the publishing side of the business and accepted an opportunity to move to Nashville with Thomas Nelson, a Christian publishing company.
I am now with Integrity Publishers, a new Christian book publisher in Nashville. It's very exciting to be part of the start up team and to build a new business from the ground up. So far things are going great and I'm having loads of fun. I am responsible for all sales into the "general" market, i.e. Wal-Mart, Sam's, Costco, Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc. As a member of the executive committee, I am also involved in decisions concerning cover design, book titles, concepts, etc. so my job stays very interesting to say the least.
My most frequent destinations are: Seattle, San Diego, Minneapolis, Detroit, New York, New Jersey and Bentonville.
I have truly been blessed in my professional life and I can't imagine doing anything else!
Update: Integrity Publishers was purchased by Thomas Nelson in September 2006, so I am back at Nelson now and responsible for selling to Barnes & Noble, Borders & Books-A-Million.
