Betty's Story

Life Life After high school, I spent a year in Greensboro before returning to Wilmington. I have had a interesting life and have 2 great daughters. Brandy is married and living in Arizona with her husband and 2 kids, Jacob and Rebecca. Beverly is with me and just entered the 8th grade at Southern Middle School as we recently relocated to the Pinehurst area. I was in the Army for 3 years and worked for almost 10 years at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville. I have been with Cape Fear Eye Associates for over 8 years in medical records. In Fayetteville, I was elected to the position of Elder at Reilly Road Presbyterian Church but have been attending the Episcopal church since relocating and will join them this fall. I am also involved in scouting high school football. Life has taken some interesting turns and I look forward to sharing more news with you all soon. School I started school in a school with all 12 grades. Lee Woodard was the best place to start school because it was so small and personal. Then we moved into Wilson and I went to Wells while my sister went to Fike. I walked to school a lot of days. My parents sent me to Wilson Christian for 5th grade because the public schools were caught up in the struggle that was the civil rights movement in 1969-1970. I went to stay with my grandparents to start 6th grade. That is how I spent 1/2 the year at Princeton, NC and half at R L Brown in Jacksonville, FL. After spending 7th grade at Kirby Smith, our family moved back to NC. We settled in Hampstead, so I finished high school at Topsail. College My first roommate was Belinda. I had never been around anyone who was not from the South. We found a way to work things out. I must have lived a sheltered life to have to ask someone my first week what kind of meat was veal? We always had beef, chicken or fish. There was the weekend Billy Joel was in town and staying at the hotel across from main campus. Some of the kids talked about trying to get in to see him but I was happy just to sit on the front steps. I sure couldn't afford a concert ticket. Then there was the night we were sitting on those same steps and some drunk flipped his jeep by hitting the curb. All the liquor and beer bottles that spilled out when the tow truck turned it over to haul it away! I remember sitting in Odell Hall for hours listening to the music students practice. It was better than the music in the dorm! I specifically remember a guy named Steve Cooper who played the organ and taught me to appreciate classical music. I hope he is still playing. Workplace I've done everything from type forms and sell cigarettes to working a produce market and wait tables in several different...Expand for more
resturants. No matter what kind of work it is, work is what you make of it or what it makes of you. Textile factories are hard work so I went into the Army to learn how to do something else. There I got better office skills and proved to myself that I can stand up to anyone who wants to get in my face and scream - because in the end he can't touch me! I enjoyed most of the time I spent in Central Supply. I worked with a lot of great people and a few I was a little worried about! I hated working odd hours and the every other weekend thing really stunk! I am grateful that Mrs. Rahilly hired me and gave me the chance to learn a lot about medical logistics. And working through a pregnancy in there was a real challenge! I can only hope the environment is more family friendly with the new management than it was in the late 90's. I now work in a great office with 7 eye doctors. Keeping track of the charts and all the HIPPA regulations is all in a day's work. I have also learned to love my document scanner. For some odd reason, they made me Medical Records Manager last year. It is a big responsibility. We are in the process of going electronic with our records. The people I work with are funny. Some stay for a while and leave (military connected) and others are long termers like me. I've been there 8 years. Military I had a short enlistment (3 years) but it was one that will stay with me forever. I found out that I was tougher than I thought and that S&S tastes pretty good on a cold morning in Alabama, especially after running 4 to 5 miles with temps in the 20's and carrying the guidon. The drill sargents called me "Rambo". I got to basic weighing 100 lbs and left 115. All that running and double portions in the mess hall. Then at AIT we went to the field for foxhole drills in the freezing rain of March in Indiana. The foxholes were almost knee deep in water when the COL came to inspect us. Then he noticed my company was 85% female (admin company). He immediately ordered us out of the foxholes and got coffee brought out to us. I have never tasted better black coffee than that morning. I was stationed at Ft Bragg with the 573 PSC of the 18th P&A Battalion (now the 18th Personnel Company). I worked with personnel transactions and their transmitting to HQ 3 times a week. Then of course, distribution of all the reports. I also worked for a time with the 19th Replacement Detachment arriving troops to Ft Bragg and main post (other than direct assignment to 82nd Airborne). Even had an intersting field exercise where I had my computer in the field environment in a rigged up conex. Lots of great people serve our country then and now. I am proud to be part of that tradition.
