Betty's Story
Life
At 32, I am working hard. I've been working at The Salvation Army for over three years now. I am about to start as the Divisional Creative Arts Director for The salvation Army. I'll be in charge of vocal music, piano, drama, dance, timbrels, etc. for our three-state area. I'm going to have my hands full! I got married when I was twenty years old. Jason, my husband, was a fellow music major. We have been married now for 12 years. We lived in the Augusta area until June 2001. My husband joined the Air Force and we were stationed at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport, LA for five years. In May of 2000, I gave birth to our first child, Weston Scott. He is a handful!! In August of 2002, we welcomed our second child, Avia Joy. She is a sweet girl. And on February 16, 2005, Thomas Richard was born into our family. He is such a sweet baby!! We live in Jackson, MS now where we both work for The Salvation Army. In the past, I have taught high school choir for two years, not consecutively. My family is very involved at church. We attend the Salvation Army church here in Jackson. I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior when I was 19. I enjoy the activities and the fellowship at church. And it's great having a wonderful church family especially since we're far from home. I'm not sure what will happen in the future for my family. We'll see. It's in the Lord's hands. Take care everyone and God bless!!
College

Augusta State University. Some people may think getting a music degree is easy but it's not!!! It took me 4-1/2 years to get my degree. Hours of band, choir, orchestra, private lessons(clarinet and voice), recital lab, orchestration, music history, piano proficiency!!, theory, and list goes on. I worked in the fine arts office. I really enjoyed working there and getting to know my professors a little better. I served as our choir president and our orchestra secretary. It was alot of hard work but it was definitely worth it.
Workplace
Since I graduated in December, I substituted for the second half of the school year. Beginning in the fall of 2000, I was the choir director and yearbook supervisor at Aquinas High School. It was tough but I learned many things. My husband went into the Air Force that year and we moved. Therefore, I only taught at Aquinas one year. In Shreveport, LA, I taught one year at Evangel Christian Academy as the high school choir director and the beginning band director. I became pregnant with our third child and didn't return the next school year. I enjoyed teaching there. My fellow colleagues were very supportive of me and the choir. After leaving the Air Force in 2006, we moved to Jackson, MS where we both work for The Salvation Army. I am the Grants & Contracts Manager and Jason is the Assistant Divisional Music Director. We've been here over two years now. We're getting settled pretty good. AND, we're a little closer to home.
