Beverly's Story

Life Since leaving the Air Force, I lived in New Jersey for a few years with my (then) husband and son; returning to Atlanta, Ga. in 1969. My son Ronald, Jr. is now grown and is a fantastic person. I have been very involved in the community, little league, PTA's, PTSA's, voter registration, activist groups (for civil rights and women's rights), & politics; elected as a delegate from the State of Georgia to the 1977 International Women's Convention in Houston, Texas, elected as an Outstanding Young Woman of America-1978. Before retiring from banking I found that I enjoyed acting. For several years I have appeared in a few plays, videos, commercials, and movies. Traveling has always been one of my passions so I've done quite a bit of traveling to some interesting places. I am now a part of "Edeliegba" a "senior" dance group. We have danced with "Ballethnic Dance Company" four years in the spring and Christmas shows at the Robert Ferst Center For The Arts; also with Manga Dance Company. We started with African dance and have expanded to Spiritual, Jazz and Tap dance. We have been together since spring 2005. I also model as well. I am active in my church (Ben Hill United Methodist Church) in the Jewels and Partners Ministry and Choir; formally a member of the Sanctuary Choir, the Couples In Christ Sunday School Class and most of the ministries of the Church. I am a member of the Veteran's Ministry at Cascade United Methodist Church. Also, I am a Grand Diva with the Regal Electrifying Divas of the Red Hat Society. I have a lot of memories & I am enjoying life! I've had a chance to reconnect with a few high school classmates and former co-workers...which has been great! In 2007 I took classes and became a Certified Energy Practitioner. I administer Detox Foot Baths, give Foot Reflexology therapy and Chair Chi Massages. I also am a consultant with Wholistic Stress Control Institute where I also ocassionally give Stress Management Workshops. **April 2008 I went to San Diego, Calif. for a week, and thanks to a classmate I was able to not only see the tourist attractions, I was able to participate in his Evangelism Class, Sunday School Class, Church Service, Mexico, the Olympic Training Center at Chula Vista(spend some time with my niece April Holmes) and a lot of other places I probably would not have gone. Had a wonderful time!!! ****Sept. 2008 I went to Beijing, China to see my niece APRIL HOLMES run in the Paralympics. April won a GOLD METAL for the 100 meters. While running the 400 meters a few days before she ran the 100 meters, April fell before crossing the finish line, she was 12 feet ahead of everyone else and was injured. April still holds World records in the 100, 200, and 400 meters, as well as other titles. There were 18 family members and friends in Beijing to cheer April on. It was a great two week trip!!!! **** ******I returned to the USA in time to change my flight and rush back to Atlanta to surprise my son on the evening he was graduating from the Police Academy......the Academy surprised him also by awarding him the "Honors Award".. *****November 2008 my sister-in-law (step) and her friend gave me a week in a gorgeous condo in Villa Rica, Ga.,everything was great. My balcony overlooked a lake and the setting was beautiful. She & her friend were in another condo but we shared a delicious Thanksgiving dinner which they prepared, as well as some other times. My son & daughter-in-law visited one day also. Great! ****December 2008 I took my annual trip TO Helen, Ga. for a week (north Ga. mountains). It's always nice. Jan. 2009 I had a heart attack....no surgery ....I'm doing well...I guess my fitness routines helped. I know I am BLESSED and I am THANKFUL ****So far June, 2009: I've only taken two trips: (1) San Francisco, Napa, and Richmond Calif. with two of my sisters. (2) In Nov., 2009: Philadelphia, Pa. & Maple Shade, New Jersey. The second trip was less active,, but it was what I needed at that time and a lot of fun. I met a lot of new friends...both trips were great! I've been so focused on my high school class reunion activities I have not planned any other trips this year, My personal workouts (although not every day) include walking 3-5 miles, stretching, aerobics, hand weights , Tai' Chi and QiGong. In Feb. 2008 I was a principle actor in a play at The Atlanta History Center, "COURAGE: Before Brown vs Board Of Education". I portrayed Annie Marshall, Thurgood Marshall's grandmother. Also did on-stage narration. We had standing ovations for all 4 shows and the preview also. June 2010: I was blessed to be selected for an "industrial shoot" last week...all went well, we didn't have to do many re-takes. We completed the shoot in about 20 minutes, even with a change of clothing for the 2nd scene. In July 2010 (don't have the dates yet) I will be doing a play reading for Dr. Georgianne Thomas, possibly reading opposite Bill Nunn or Charles Black. Lucky me!! ****High School Alumni**** During our Nov. 2006 meeting I was elected the new President, Marion Brown was elected the new Vice President. We were re-elected Nov. 2008. My class the Class 0f 1960 Alumni just completed our four day celebration of our 50th class reunion activities. I has a fantastic time and hope everyone else did too!!! We had a "meet & greet", a formal dinner dance, a cookout in the park, and a memorial service which included a tribute to fathers (Father's Day). The Veteran's group I belong to "Cascade United Methodist Church Veteran's Ministry" celebrated Veteran's Day together with a free dinner for Vet's Nov. 7th at McCormick & Schmidt Restaurant, a dinner dance at Dobbins Air Reserve Base Consolidated Club, and were in charge of the 11:00 a.m. military inspired church servi...Expand for more
ce, providing speakers for both events. For the Thanksgiving week I was in Soperton, Ga. (1st time), had a good time, met a lot of people...one in particular was a "real character" . I stayed in a beautiful newly built home {designed by the owners-family/friend) on 8 acres of land....ate too much good food. The Sunday before I left town I hosted some family members at my home for an early Thanksgiving dinner, and to SURPRISE my only living Uncle with an 80th birthday celebration. A joyous time!!! I am looking forward to a fantastic December and New Year.....MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HOLIDAYS, MAY OUR NEW YEARS BE THE BEST EVER!!!!! SPEAKING OF HEROS AND INSPIRATION: I have always had to look inside myself for my hero.....and of course, first to God. My inspiration comes from my grandmother Mrs. Hazel C. Worthy-Jones. She had many challenges, many disappointments, endured much, forgave everyone, helped everyone. She always worked it out somehow. She held her head high and despite the odds was victorious. I don't ever remember her complaining though, (I do some times). She was amazing, awesome, outstanding, inspiring, a beautiful spirit. Wow! I can't believe it's been a year since I made an entry....It's been a BUSY, but very good year(it's now Dec. 5, 2011). In January I had a surprise birthday party for my Aunt( 80 yrs old), my sister (70 yrs old) and my son (47 yrs old). It was fun and more people attended than I expected, it was all good! I also surprised my sister by taking her to a taping of the "Monique Show". In February my nephew took me, his lady, and her mother to see the"Alvin Ailey Dance Company", great! My Veteran's group took a short trip to Tuskeegee to visit the "Tuskeegee Airmen Museum, they had recently moved so all was not complete, but it was good to see what we did. The "Jewels & Partners Ministry asked me to M.C. the "Annual Heritage Luncheon" AS " Harriett Tubman" and do a portrayal of Harriett. It went well, I surprised them by starting the program by singing a few lines from one of Harriett's favorite songs. No one had ever heard me sing a solo! I was so pleased, and stayed in character throughout the luncheon!!!! Early in the year I started taking classes in Ballet & Belly Dancing, just for fun, but we did perform a few times. I also did some "Extra" work / walk-on roles in three movies: "Joyful Noise" ,"The Odd Life Of Timothy Green" and "Gamers". In June there was a weekend conference with Master Chunyi Lin (the founder of Spring Forest Qigong) in which Dr. Ra and I were asked to demonstrate (on stage) a new procedure which Master Lin created. In Sept. my church formed a senior dance group which I am a part of. Our first performance was Oct. 9th for Women's Day at both services. We were an instant success, and have been asked to perform many times since then. We performed Sat. at a luncheon (a dance which we choreographed ourselves, the young lady who heads the Dance Ministry choreographed the other dances). We decided to name the group "Inspired By God's Grace" This took off faster than we anticipated! I also sang (3 performances) with The Atlanta Symphony Gospel Chorus, directed by Mr. Jarvis Wilson, the Orchestra was conducted by Mr. Chelsea Tifton II. It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun too! A great experience! I sang with them 2008 and 2009 also. In Oct. I was blessed to be able to go to Wash., D.C. for the M.L.King Memorial Dedication Ceremony and had a wonderful time. In Nov. my Veteran's group celebrated Veteran's Day with a dinner dance where Major General (Ret.) James Donald was the speaker. On Sunday the group was in charge of both church services (Cascade U.M. Church), where Rear Admiral Barry C. Black (Ret.) was the speaker...both did a great job. Some of the Veteran's dined together at McCormick & Schmidt (free meal). On Saturday the United Methodist Men at Ben Hill UM Church invited Veterans to a breakfast meeting (very good).l In Nov. I also resigned from the Presidency of the Class of 1960 Alumni. Many things were accomplished during my time as Pres., but decided last year not to continue. We had a great 50th Reunion in 2010. I served in 2011 because the group would not vote during our election time in 2010 to elect new officers. I also resigned from the Presidency of The Atlanta Spring Forest Qigong Guild. I will participate as a member in both organizations, just not as an officer. I want to devote more time to my other creative side . I hope all will have a fantastic year end and a wonderful new year......2012!!!!! Wow! It's 2014, April 24th.... so much has happened since I have posted anything. Most recently, I was asked to perform again with Ballethnic Dance Company (professional ballet company). I had performed with them about 5 years in their annual "Urban Nut Cracker" (dancing and speaking), and in their annual spring shows of differing titles, before I had the heart attack in 2009. Anyway, the ballet was adapted from "Flyin' West" a play by Pearl Cleage. I ended up singing, a little acting.... had a line while on stage by myself, and a little dancing. It was great!!!! We did 6 shows at the Rialto Theatre. Pryor to that I was asked to MC a Fitness (body building) & Fashion show. It was fun, even told a few jokes. 2012 I was asked to MC my family reunion....it was hugh, but I truly enjoyed it....all went well. I am still dancing with "Inspired By God's Grace"...Easter was outstanding (all four movement ministries performed "worshiped" together). I am also still teaching Qigong (chee-gong) from time to time. I hope everyone's doing some things they enjoy! The DTH All Class Outing at the school is August 2nd (my birthday) from about 11am til 7pm. Hope to see some of you there!
