Beverly's Story
Life
Still living and fulfilling dreams.
Please, let me know you visited. Take care and have a fabulous day. :)
School
My memories of high school are fantastic. I still love the fact that I was able to cut so many classes, not get caught, and still graduate with honors. Of course, when I was teaching, I couldn't believe it when a student skipped my class. My classes were way too much fun to skip. Besides, they never bring me cookies, like we always did for Uncle Andy.
My favorite teachers in high school were Danny Whittenton - PC Teacher of the Year 2008 (I let him win), all my band directors, and of course, Leonard Powell. As far as inspirations go, though, those would have to be Edna Poplin and Erving Hamme (junior high band director) and my 3rd grade teacher on Guam, Mrs. Chanselor.
I loved school and I always wanted my students to feel that way, so I loved them, too.
College
College seemed to be a constant in my life. Right after high school, I went to USF and majored in English. Funny, I didn't have nearly as much fun there as I did in high school. I only cared about ge...Expand for more
tting the degree. YEARS later, I spent two summers in Hattiesburg, MS at USM where I received my Master's Degree, and then went on to earn a Doctorate more years later.
Workplace
I started teaching right out of college, which was right after high school. I quit after 3 years and moved to California where I went back to school for a while, then worked in a college -- not teaching. I was the registar. I left there after 3 years and moved back to Florida. I worked at Disney for a short time as I waited for the new school year to begin and I returned to teaching. After another 8 years, I left teaching again and became an Oracle Database Administrator at Kennedy Space Center. That was an incredible place to work, but a small cubicle is not really for me. I am back in the classroom again. My students are my captive audience where I get to act out all kinds of wonderful roles. Besides, I have finally realized that teaching is my calling in life. I'm probably enjoying it more now than ever before. I'm just not crazy about all the hoops the Department of Education require, such as NCLB.
