Bill's Story

After graduating from Salvatorian Seminary, I attended Loras College in Dubuque, IA for 1-1/2 yrs, then decided that my vocation was elsewhere. I transferred to Illinois State Univeristy in Normal, graduated with degrees in Sociology-Anthroplogy, emphesis on historical archaeology. Did graduate work in Anthroplogy there and then Indiana University. Again decided to change directions again. Had worked as an orderly in a hospital through SS and into college. Worked in a girls' dorm cafeteria during college, and continued working as an orderly at the Student Health Center at IU. Was night manager in a resturant, but decided I really enjoyed medicine more. In those days, I was "too Old' at 28 to get into medical school, but my brother heard of this new profession - Physician Assistant- so I applied and was accepted at Rutgers in New Jersey and Southwestern medical School in Dallas. decided to head south and have been in Texas since 1975. Got engaged to a medical student, was supposed to stay and teach in Dallas, but after 2 weeks of a preceptorship in a small south Texas town with a great Family Physician, accepted a job in Sinton. Ardys and I both eventually finished all training and she moved here in 1980, and we were married. We were married for 23 years and evntually divorced. Two children, Robert teaches elemntary school, recently moving back here from Seattle to teach in the Catholic school he attended in Corpus Christi. Helen is in Houston, working with primates at the Houston Zoo. I remarried 8 years ago to my wonderful Sofia, and added two stepdaughters, and hav a 4 y/o granddaughter and 7 y/o grandson. Family Practice, Occupational Medicine for the Army, then rehabilitation medicine, before getting back to Family Medicine in 1992. Stayed with the Family Practice Residency Program in Corpus Christi until 2007, then moved to an Indigent clinic under the same sytem, CHRISTUS Health, until last Oct.. Now have a whole floor in the hospital (same one I had worked on under Family Practice) to myself, and still do indigent care, and am the back up and urgent care clinic for all of the outlying clinics and Family Practice. Have been active in the profession, including 10 years on the Board of Directors, including president, of the Texas Academy of Physician Assistants, alternate to the Advisory Board to the Texas Board of Medical Examiners, and Delegate and committee member to the American Academy of Physician Assistant. Also, initial president to the Texas Physician Assitant Foundation. Multiple community activities including member and president of the Advisory Board of the Catholic elemnetary school, Museum Board Member and other activities. Finally, when I left the seminary, the spirtual director told me I would never return once I left. I told him I would be back some day, and was ordained to the Permanent Diaconate on 11/14/09, after 12 years of preparation including delays due to changes in the Norms and a sabatical due to my divorce. In additin to parish work, I had been involved in the formation program for the diaconate and, Sofia and I have been involved in the ministry of grief support to the divorced and widowed for 10 years, holding 2 ten weeks sessions weekly each year. Has not been dull, but a blessed life. God Bless
