Bill's Story

Hello all, Originally from Atlanta, I attended East Lake & Knollwood elemetary schools before my Dad transferred to DC with the Postal Service in 1963. I attended Barrett Elementary, Kenmore Junior High and W&L in Arlington before moving back to Georgia to graduate from Columbia HS in Dekalb County. I left Arlington in the middle of my Junior year, 1969-70, to move back to Georgia with my family. I still consider W&L as 'my' high school and Arlington as where I grew up. It would have been good to finish the cylce with many of you that were in the same schools. At Columbia HS in GA I had to find a place to fit in and that turned out to be the Track team. While at W&L I was part of the State Champion Mile Relay team in 1969, and when I came to Georgia my team also won the Mile Relay in 1971, In VA I was a Sophmore runner with 3 Seniors. In GA I was one of 3 Seniors with a Sophmore....life is interesting. The 3 Seniors at W&L were Mike Stanton, George Muschamp and Stallings Wilson if anyone happened to know them. I married at 19, joined the Navy at 21 and traveled to Japan and Italy working as a Cryptologist. After 6 years, I left the Navy and went to work for AT&T and later Hewlett-Packard where I retired in 2014. I lived in Atlanta, Raleigh, Memphis and came back to In Atlanta we lived only a couple of miles from the house where my parents lived when I was born and my first elementary school, East Lake. Several moves later we now live north of Atlanta. I had 3 children in my first marriage and adopted 1 in my secon...Expand for more
d marriage which also ended in divorce. Now 15+ years into my third marriage all is well and life is good. Two of my children live in Texas, a programmer and a graphic designer. A third in WDC working for the GAO, and the fourth is still here inthe Atlanta area and is a VP at a tech company. As of now there are 3 perfect grand-daughters! My Mom passed at 99, She loved Arlington and kept in touch with a couple of neighbors from the days on N. Columbus St. For fun I enjoy cooking, gardening, and backpacking. I have hiked the entire Appalachian Trail, 2193.1 miles, over the last 23 years, from GA to ME. We are active members of the local Appalachian Trail club. Lubber Run park was behind my house in Arlington and played a big part in my enjoyment of nature. Tom Hagler and I had more fun in that park....building dams, walking on ice in the creek, climbing trees, sledding, etc. My current home is on 2 acres and backs up to a 12 mile greenway. I have been back through DC a couple of times and have driven through Arlington to check out the changes. Wow, Parkington is gone, the W&L campus is totally rebuilt, and the highways continue to grow. But, it is still Arlington at the core and walking through the park still feels great to me.... Well after high school, the Navy and life, I finally went back to get a Business degree at Georgia State (1999) and later went to the Columbia University Senior Executive Program (2008) in NY. All in all I have enjoyed life and all it has to offer. Take care, Bill - Atlanta, Feb 2023
