Bill's Story
After graduating, my Father was transfered to Iowa. I entered the Univ. of Iowa, and after my 3rd semester I volunteered to the U.S. Army Infantry. From there, I volunteered for the Long Range Recon Patrol or commonly known as the L.R.R.P.'s(Lurps). I spent 2 years in Vietnam (1967-1969) fighting in the mountain jungles before returning home. I re-entered IOWA and graduated in 1972 with a Bacholars Degree in Science. I was hired by Oscar Mayer in Marketing and Product Development. From there I worked for Johnson & Johnson in the same capacity. A few years later, I was hired by a fledgeling company, FlightySafety International, to help develop their Marketing Department ( 4 years ago was sold to Warren Buffet for $1.9 Billion. Best stock invested I've ever made). In 1986 I was hired by Learjet/Bombardier to run New Aircraft Final Assembly and World Wide Product Support. In 1991 I was hired by Beechcraft/Raytheon to market and develop special application military and commerical aircraft internationally. I retired in 2009. Through that time I was married, had a daughter and a son. They both have daughters and I'm a proud grandfather. In July of 2010 I was honored by the International Aerospace Industry at a conference in Calgary, Alberta Canada as "Man of the Year" for my contributions to the Aerospace Industry. In 2011 I was asked to be the Director of the area's Food Pantry, and I accepted. It's a non-profit. We feed an average of 2000 per month poor, working poor, disabled, veterans, seniors on fixed income and over 600 are children (1 thru 17). There is no salary involved, but that's fine, because I honestly feel like I really doing something for those in need.
**While I'll continue as Director of our Community Food Pantry, I will be starting a second carreer. I've been substituting at our Elementry School as the Full Time Sub for Pre K to 8th grade. At those ages, they do keep you on your toes!!!
***This past Sunday, March 30 2014, the Catholic Diocese of Rockford ( Northwestern Illinois and Western Metro Chicago) presented me with the Golden Rose Award, which is given every Lenten Season for work in accordance with the teachings of our Lord. My working with needy as the Director of our Community Food Pantry, which assists up to 2,000 per month, Clothing them, finding Medical & Dental Care, opening a Free Library, arranging English Classes for our new Imagrants, and for up to 400 Children ages 1 t...Expand for more
o 12 arranging a partnership between our Food Pantry and Toys For Tot's, so they can have Christmas Gifts and a Tree like other Children. Quite frankly, helping those in most need is the least I can do. I'm very humbled by this award.
*** I've been in the Knights of Columbus since 2000. Last month ( May 14), I Was ellivate to Deputy Grand Knight( 2nd in Command) for our Council in Northwest Illinois. This time next year I will be ellivate to Grand Knight. Out of all the Catholic men in this area, this is quit humbling. Stay tuned, my life and the way I live it, I'm not finished yet.
In 2016 I developed a Educational Grant Program to assist needy families in helping with tuition to send their children to Catholic Schools. It's fully funded by the Knights of Columbus for Grant Aide in subsidiesing tuition for Catholic Elementary, High School and College. This is our fifth year, and so far we have helped 83 families.
** This month, 26 June, 2017, I was elevated to the position of Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus for this section of Northwestern Illinois and appointed to the Honor Guard and Security Escort for the Bishop of the Rockford Dioceses.
*** 2018 (April) has begun, and I’ve received some good news and some bad news. The good news is my Son, Seth, and my terrific daughter-in-law, Laura, are expecting a child in December. I’m in hopes it will be a boy, I have two granddaughters, but as long as the child is healthy is the most important thing. The bad news is for the last three years I’ve been fighting a terminal lung desease, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. There is no cure, it turns healthy lung tissue into a harden unusable brownish-gray and reduces the ability to oxygenate the blood. This has put an extra work load on my heart, and now it’s failing. So, with all that, my goal is to see my new grandchild, and that’s what keeps me going.
***May 28, 2018 - Memorial Day. I’ve spent the last 5 days in the hospital draining water from lungs. This is part of the problem you develop from IPF, and it incumbers the heart from doing its job. My challenge as well as my goal is to make it to Christmas so I can see my new Grandchild. Believe me, physically, it is a real challenge. Just wanted to let all of know, I remember your faces, voices and laughter from either Cloverdale Jr. High or Sidney Lanier. I know it sounds strange, but it’s a comfort to me because I loved those days, especially summer.
