July 2018 Update to the Dec 07 post
Today I Modified the posting and added a few pictures.
Still happy, healthy and active. VFMA then West Point graduating in 1961. 21+ years as Army officer took us to Fort Sill, Fort Bliss, Los Angeles, Korea, back to Sill and Bliss, Colorado Springs, San Rafael CA, Vietnam, Stanford Univ, back to West Point as a Mechanical Engineering Prof, Germany and back to West Point. Retired from the active Army in 1982 and moved to El Paso, TX, and in 2010 made another move to the mountains of New Mexico.
Married Lona, a Calif girl, 55 years ago. Raised in San Diego and a USC grad, she's been able to engineer a great marriage, a close-knit family and a teaching career surviving 15+ moves in response to Army orders and my second career. She retired in 2002 after 27 years in education, the last 6 years as Elementary School Principal in El Paso, TX. We have two sons and a daughter, all married.
After my Army career I worked as a Systems Engineer at Raytheon Co, for 23 years. Worked advanced air defense missile systems projects in the high desert of West Texas (El Paso). Retired for good in 2005
Travel less now, but what we do keeps us in touch our 3 kids and 9 grandkids in VA, MI and NY. Both sons, and two grandsons followed me to West Point
Son Rob, an '88 grad, is now a COL with safe returns from 2 tours in Iraq. He has 2 daughters and is now a tenured professor heading the Systems Engineering Department at West Point, NY. He has completed 30 years of commissioned service and will be retired as a Brigadier General in early September 2018. Rob's Daughters have now graduated college (Delaware and Loyola Marymount) and entered the work force.
Son Rick is an '89 West Point grad. After 5 years service in Army he decided to pursue an automotive career with GM in Detroit area. Says he's had the best job in GM, licensed to drive at 160 mph, and does -- on tracks in MI and Germany. A few years back, Rick and family went to China for a three year assignment where they lived in Shanghai. The kids (2 girls & 2 boys) went to international schools while Rick was the GM interface for the Chinese company building GM cars. Now with 23 years at GM, he is one of their Executive Engineers and again living in Michigan. Two kids have completed college. His third kid had a heck of a run as a HS quarterback, and just began his college education at West Point a month after his brother graduated with the class of 2017. So there are now five Kewleys who have chosen West Point to hone their leadership skills. -- We are very proud of their choices and achievements.
Our daughter Dorene is also an engineer by trade. SMU and Duke provided degrees in Mechanical Engineering. She has a son and two young daughters, and Vienna, VA is where they make their home. She's active in design work that will enable computer systems to maximize internet capabilities in futuristic scenarios. Her kids' activities, on and off the athletic field, makes for an extremely busy lifestyle with hardly any downtime.
Retirement allows me to play golf for fun. -- I have now won a few events, and have shot my age at least once every year since I turned 70. -- About six years ago we sold our El Paso home and became full time residents in Alto, NM (a two-course mountain community near Ruidoso). It's a great place to live and play. Living at 7500 feet elevation, the breeze is our air conditioning, the mountains touch a clear blue sky, and at night the darkness reveals stars you've never seen before. We have deer, elk, wild horses and turkeys, other birds, chipmunks, raccoons, foxes, an occasional mo...Expand for more
untain lion and a few bears to entertain us. Nearby Ruidoso is a rustic mountain town catering to summer tourists and winter skiers Spencer Theater, one of the finest in the country, is where we enjoy top-notch entertainers (Crystal Gayle, the Lettermen, the Texas Tenors, The Four Freshmen, ...) and traveling shows you may have caught on Broadway in NY City. Years ago Billy the Kid romped about here in the wild, wild west town of Lincoln, NM. It's tamed down now, and offers an opportunity to touch history in a little town that hasn't changed much in 140 years. Lonie is a member of the "Friends Group" who work constantly to protect the historical face of Lincoln.
But Alto is peaceful and serene, like a vacation spot, and we have a community of caring, responsible friends. --- We are in our 35th year here now and both Lonie and I have chosen to participate in the governing of our 2,100 member community. I was elected to and served a full term on our board of directors. The final year the board elected me to be President and leader of the community for all budgetary, financial, growth and services in the operation and maintenance of our country club and home owners association. I came through it all in good standing and with an organization a little better than when I got into its politics. Last year (2017) our Alto Lakes Community celebrated its 50th year anniversary, and Lonie stepped up to the plate to support the event. As the author of a commemorative book written for the membership, she spent more than a year researching, interviewing people and capturing its 50 year history. It's a wonderful 160 page hard cover book that was distributed during the celebration and is found on hundreds of coffee tables throughout the community. Lonie's book is highly thought of, and when she introduced her work she received a standing ovation from the more than 700 members attending the main event. I am again proud of what she has done, and we think life here is great.
Occasionally I get to see friends and classmates from the East Coast, but not often enough. Looking back over the 60 years since I left Prospect Park, I wish there had been paths taken that might have helped us stay in touch. Such good friends growing up, but instead of being near enough to share in our work, travel, family, joy, success and failures, we traveled in different circles. -- However, a couple of old friends/baseball teammates promoted my HS, Legion, and College baseball records to the selection committee for the DELCO Athletic Hall of Fame. -- I am proud to say that, because of their recommendations, I was among the 16 men and women athletes from multiple sports that were elected to the Hall of Fame in April 2016. Over 400 attended the ceremony and I feel truly honored to have joined the elite group of Delaware County Pennsylvania's professional and amateur athletes, officials and coaches elected to the DELCO HOF since its inception in 1939.
-- "My friends, classmates, teammates and neighbors, I wish you could know how much you gave to me, how much you've shaped my life. -- Unknowingly our relationships as kids enabled me to take little traits from each of you that have served me well these many years. You helped shape the foundation of character by which I make comparisons, chose my wife, raised our family, live my life, and interact with others. You are not forgotten and I thank you very much."
I do hope we can renew our friendships. -- Look for me in the phone book, or drop me a message here, and perhaps we can arrange a visit. If you are in our NM neighborhood call ahead so I can get us a tee time.
