Bob's Story
My biggest surprise is that, in High School, I never expected that my life would be as amazing as it has turned out.
I've always been a pretty quiet person. Most people who do not know me well wouldn't guess that I've jumped out of airplanes, rode freight trains across the Arizona/New Mexico desert in the middle of the night, given The Shining Path a chance at me, spent the night in the Pocatello freight yard taking pictures, done three weeks jury duty on a gang murder trial, flown in a glider plane over Boulder twice, been up in a hot air balloon, done 28mph on a skateboard and 53mph on a bicycle coming down Slumgullian pass into Lake City on a road with more potholes than the moon has craters or jumped off a 65' cliff into Blue Mesa Reservoir. Now I've started taking flying lessons.
Vacation this year has me landing in Panama City, Panama and leaving from Bogota, Colombia. I was planning to get to Bogota by bus and meet people on the way. Nobody ever mentioned "The Darien Gap" to me before. Apparently there is a 100 mile stretch of Panama at the Colombia border where ...Expand for more
the world disappears. Even the Pan American highway just ends. People say that the conquistadors beat the oceans getting to the Americas, they conquered the Aymara, Inca and the Maya. They beat the desert in Peru and most of the jungle in central and south America, but when they got to The Darien Gap they just said "screw this" and turned back. How do you think I'm going to do?
Look at outside.away.com/outside/features/200409/panama_darien_gap_1 cut and paste because classmates is so prude about what you can post.
The plan for this year (2011) is a landing on a little 50 SQ mile island in the south pacific (Easter Island) and returning from Cusco, Peru (the town where I want to retire). Everything in between will be shooting from the hip. I'd love to be able to say I hopped a freighter into Chile or Peru or rode a freight train in South America. It may sound nuts but those have been the most memorable moments of my life.
