Brenda's Story
Some years ago I found a gravestone in our hometown cemetery bearing my surname with the date of death given being my birthday, May 6, in 1915. Asking questions of family I learned that he was my father's uncle who died at the age of 28 after attending a union meeting. A search of the Sudbury Star gave more details. A front page story on May 8th, 1915 leaves little room for doubt: "James Lindala, union secretary, died of acute indigestion shortly after testifying against the two pseudo detectives sent to Sudbury to investigate the activities of the Western Federation of Miners." Dad's parents happened to have a regular card playing foursome with an MP and his wife and the latter did the favour of having the name removed from the list, so dad and his brother got to work underground. In retrospect, I know father and uncle would have been happier campers, without a perpetual dark cloud overhead, had they worked for the Ministry of Highways, like their father, who was the younger of "James Lindala". That's my story; and it's a cold case. Happy birthday to me. James wasn't alone, as I learned when I searched the Sudbury Public Library's history of unions. There were others who met mysterious ends, some alleged to have been murdered because of union involvement.
