Brenda's Story

School days were wonderful at school # 59! Miss Katz was my first teacher and I started school in 1958. That was the first year of integration and the first African American child was allowed in school. His name was Reginald and he was in my class. I was four years old and I loved it. I remember the walks from Park Heights Avenue and Reisterstown Road we lived in several different homes as we moved once. I remember the Hebrew school that sat across from #59 and we went there everyday for lessons. There was a park on the side of the school and my mom took me there in the spring for picnic lunchs and to smell the wonderful flowers. My mom was very active in school as a helper. She came often to collect the milk money. I remember walking home at lunchtime and enjoying lunch with my mom. Do you remember the Hop Scotch contests? How about jumping rope and the hand games? I remember the Avalon theatre and I remember seeing Elvis in" Blue Hawaii" and" Where the Boys Are" with Connie Francis. I remember Park Lane and taking a walk every evening in the summertime to get a goodie. Do you remember five cents coddies and seven cents cherry cokes? How about when Mickey Mantle signed autographs at the corner of Park Heights and Keyworth(at the gas station)? I remember Eddie's grocery store and Goldberg's where we bought tennis shoes every spring for summer fun. I remember some of the teachers such as ; Ms. Pinkerton, Ms. Lutz, Ms. Greenberg (she was my last teacher in 6th grade). How about the Enoch Pratt library? We all spent a good bit of time there. I remember the bomb drills and when President Kennedy was shot and the whole school was sent outside and everyone cried. How about Towanda Park? We took t...Expand for more
ap and ballet and there was a pool for swimming. I remember; Michael Blum, Neva Wall, Mindy Fine, Pat Furley, and Nancy Cohen. The drug store on the corner of Park Heights(Seidlin's?) and I believe that Mr. Gertz was the handsome Principle that everyone loved. I remember Carlin's and going roller skating and in the summer we looked forward to going to Gwynne Oak Amusement Park. How about Buddy Dean? Remember running home from school to watch them dance and then there was the Diner and Mondawmin Mall and Reisterstown Plaza. We really thought we were something going to the mall every weekend and buying 45 records of the latest idol. Hecht Co was the place to buy really nice things. Christmas shopping was done downtown at Hecht's, Hutzler's, or Breger Gutman. I have been married to someone from Pimlico now for 39 years and we have two children. One is in NJ and one lives here. My daughter in NJ owns a business much like Frank's here in MD. My son is a Correctional Officer. I have given 26 years to the State of MD as a Supervisor in Parole and Probation. I have also given 26 years to working with the Developmentally Disabled. I am the proud grandmother of 2 and a new one on the way. I have one finishing high school this year one going into high school and one coming into this world. I will forever remember my days at # 59 and wish that the world was the same now as then. The warm summer nights when you could keep your doors open and everyone sat on the porch and neighbors talked. Looking forward to the summer and amusement rides and roller skating and long walks and movies (that you could watch over and over and not leave when the movie ended) and playing .It was a wonderful school and neighborhood!
