Brendon's Story
Life
Enjoying my new job immensely! Glad to be home in the U.S. and in Washington state, no less... although missing Europe terribly. I've already put some pictures on this site in various places... I have a primary photos website that has all of them, so send me a message if you'd like to see them :) (It would take forever to put all of them on this website too...)
School
As far as high school goes, I was only even really there during my sophomore year; and even then, that was the year I started taking classes up at Green River Community College. After that I was in Running Start at GRCC for junior and senior year, with the likes of Jai Patel and Ryan Schwarz, only coming into KR for 1st period orchestra class. High school itself is over-rated--don't get me wrong, I like KR itself just fine. It isn't necessarily this overwhelming stage of life, or even a period of "formative years" that define you as an adult. It's a time to go to school. I've found, in my own life and in my observations of others, that the years after high school, AND after college, are what's really formative, and are what really test a person's strengths and weaknesses.
College
Did a little college during--and after--high school, but of course that went on hold while I was in the Army. I took online classes whenever I was able to; now that I have the GI Bill, I plan on using that benefit at some point to further myself academically. As it stands at the moment, however, it isn't of dire necessity in my current job, nor my career path. When I finally do start taking some kind of classwork it'll probably be to enhance my current career, and possibly for my own amusement.
Workplace
First job was at Camp Berachah near Covington, leading mountain bike rides and working with kids... I had that job for five years. It was the worst-paying job I've ever had, and probably the most fulfilling. I worked at Barnes & Noble in Tukwila as a second job for the last two years I was at camp. After I moved up to Bellingham, so that I could live nearer to my then-fiancee (now wife), I worked at an Arby's for two or three months before fi...Expand for more
nding a job at the T-Mobile call center in Bellingham, as a financial services representative. I had already enlisted in the Army before I took the T-Mobile job, however, so the T-Mobile thing was temporary while I was in the Army's Delayed Entry Program. I left for Basic Training in February 2003, then AIT in April 2003, and graduated AIT in August 2003. After a brief week or two at home I left for Germany in early Sept. 2003, to Wiesbaden; which would be my new home for the next 3+ years. I deployed to Baghdad, Iraq after only six weeks in Germany, and was in Iraq for the next nine months. I returned in July 2004, and spent the rest of my time in the Army in Germany, in a rather frustrating and mediocre unit with a surprising amount of good people, equally frustrated as I with that unit. After leaving Germany in December 2006 on terminal leave (pending my actual termination date of Feb. 2007), I returned to my home state of Washington, and have been here since. I started my current job as a Lockheed Martin contractor working with the FAA in April 2007.
Military
Well, signed up for the Army in June 2002, went to Basic at Fort Jackson Feb-Apr 2003, went to AIT in Fort Huachuca, Arizona, Apr-Aug 2003. After a two-week break, flew to Wiesbaden, Germany; briefly got myself settled in, procured on-post housing, brought Chel over, and got to spend about a month with her before getting sent downrange to Iraq. I was there October 2003 until July 2004; three months of that was the extension given to 1st Armored Division due to the Shiite uprisings in the south, at the time. THAT, sufficed to say, was a bad day when we found out we'd be sticking around for another three months the day before we were supposed to leave for Kuwait. It went nicely with the fact that I got sent to Iraq on my birthday, the previous October. I returned to Germany in July 2004; the wife and I traveled around whenever possible and ended up visiting about 22 European countries during the 3+ years we lived in Germany. I returned home to Washington state in December 2006 on leave, and my active duty officially ended in February 2007.
