Brenna's Story

Life After high school, I attended California State University Sacramento. However, the experience at such a large university left me feeling uncomfortable with my surroundings. (Plus I wasn't excited to live in all that smog!) When I was 20 years old my friends were all surprised when I announced I was moving to Alaska (with one week's notice). I tried to imagine what Anchorage would be like, but I could only bring to mind the Jack London books I had read when I was a child. When I arrived at the Anchorage airport I was welcomed by my brother Aaron and quickly moved in with him until my dorm room opened in the fall. Aaron did a wonderful job as my guide of his adopted home state. We hiked up mountains and rock-climbed along the Seward Highway more times than I can remember. My brother and I were reintroduced as the friends we hadn't been in nearly 20 years. He acquainted me with the university and many people with whom today I am still friends. I attended school for two semesters and enrolled in mostly fun, artsy classes like yoga and photography. At the time I was majoring in Art and was very interested in both photography and ceramics. One snowy Saturday my roommate invited me to join her and a friend to go skiing. She told me of her friend who knew me from school, but I couldn't place the name to a face. When he came to pick us up from our dorm, I instantly recognized him as the young handsome classmate from our photography course. We both had a great time skiing that day and have never stopped spending time together. Jason and I dated and traveled all over Alaska and California, living as carefree college students. We skied during the winter and rock climbed and camped during the summer. My life took an exciting and rewarding twist when we married on November 17th in a wonderful ceremony on an unusually stormy winter day. Our wedding was set in Palmer, Alaska, Jason's hometown. ding attire, had to hitch a ride with strangers after our car became stuck, motionless on a hill. We were over an hour late to the ceremony, but our arrival by fire truck gave everyone a good story to tell. It meant so much to see how many of our friends and family had braved the ice storm and the long wait to be with us on this special day. We had a baby boy on April 24th, 2002. Jason named him Sean, and I chose Edward for a middle name after my dad. Sean has, as every child has for every parent, changed our lives in so many unimaginable ways. Jason and I become closer everyday as we grow together as parents. All of our choices revolve around Sean. We bought a home complete with a big backyard with plenty of room for Sean to grow and discover. Sean is especially interested in books which are great for his developing imagination. We love him more than he'll ever know. Becoming a mother has brought me much closer to my own mother. More so now than ever, she has become one of my greatest inspirations as well as one of my best friends. I love to see her interact with Sean. Knowing in retrospect the challenges of motherhood, I appreciate the love and patience she had for me when I was growing up. My mother will always amaze me with the confidence she has in me. My family will always be a loving inspiration in my life. Sean is my reason for attending college again. Being a mother has helped me to focus on how important getting an education is. Although it's challenging to balance family life with obtaining my degree, I know I will graduate because I'm doing it for Sean. I have always held a desire for teaching, but until recently it always seemed to be such distant goal. I am now enrolled in the education program at Alaska Pacific Univeristy and am a member of Kappa Delta Pi, a national honor society for education. I plan to graduate in December of 2005. And last but not least- Sean is due to have a little brother around the first of the year (2006).
