Brent's Story
Life
Auburn graduate in architecture, and have lived in Buckhead/Atlanta for 18 years and currently have my own business at home as a residential architect. Since Oct/'07 I've been working for a medium size residential firm here in Buckhead for Norman Askins. Still involved w/ music, and have sung in church choirs for over 30 years. Its been tough getting established in a big city, but I wanted the most out of life I could get which is also good for business. My determination to suceed has finally paid off. I do miss the ocean, but living in P.C. in the '70's left much to be desired? Fortunately there are enough lakes to go around in Georgia, and have been blessed w/ friends and or clients who have their own boats!
School
Mosley was tough emotionally for me since I was different from 99% of "regular guys"- I stood out in the crowd and never clicked w/ the "ruling majority". I clung to the coming day of graduation, but along the way I discovered that music, art and architecture gave me the lift I needed to make it in the world and retain my sanity. Bob Favre in art, Blondelle McGowan in chorus, Elenor Taylor & Ray Wishart in architectural drafting equipped me to suceed today!
College
Since I was not willing to be as smart as everyone thought I was, I went to Troy University for a year, (since I'm origianlly from there and stayed w/ grandparents), before transfering to Auburn. After being accepted into the School of Architecture it took me six years to complete my Bachelors of Architecture. Auburn was like "Somewhere in Time", far removed from the real world in rural Alabama. My new friends really helped me w/ my esteem issues and gave me the confindence to being my own person. The Bo Jackson/ Pat Dye years...Expand for more
were fantastic! Auburn started winning games against Alabama for the first time and AU has never been the same.
During a field trip or two to Atlanta, I knew that I was a city boy at heart and loved the architecture both new and old that was built there. Many of my classmates were from Georgia and it made sense career wise for me.
Workplace
I learned in Atlanta how competitive it was, but in the late 80's and early 90's jobs in architecture were few and far between. I worked w/ a couple of firms and didn't advance because work was slow. To ride out the recession, I worked w/ a support services company that managed lawfirms. Finally in '97 I started looking again for work and started down a residential design career path. Three residential design firms later I managed to turn my side work into a full time business in '03. I also do contract work for other designers and architects who need construction docs. done. Drafting on the computer comes easy now, and w/ the design experience I have gained has given me the tools to operate a home office. It is freeing to be able to work at your own pace and be your own boss. My greatest sucess is a 9K sq. ft. log home on Lake Lanier that has taken three years to design and build. Most of my projects are large additions and complete renovations since most clients love their location. I did work on two large beach homes at Watercolor next to Seaside in my last firm which hit close to home. It is amazing how through the decades how the value of homes and property have become everywhere.

Does dreaming of working on a Federated Starship count?
My hat is off to anyone who lays their life down for others. Godspeed to the young men and women serving everywhere!
