Brenton's Story

Life Right now I'm just taking life easy. I haven't settled down with anything, but I'm in no hurry. I have a good job as a designer at the Coleman Co. in Wichita, a nice apartment all to myself, and having a good time watching live bands with friends in old town. I still have plenty of goals that I would like to do. Im considering Chicago to further my carreer. I also like Texas. I need to go somewhere that the design industry will continue to grow and produce challenging jobs. I am intrested in illustration the most so maybe some childrens books would be fun. Who knows? School Well unlike most of you, I really wasn't into school. Ha! I really wanted to go to a university when I was a senior. But then I decided that I would try Hutchinson Community College so I could stay close to someone and get some gen. ed. classes out of the way. After the first semester I visited Salina Area Tech and thought that It was best for me. I'm so glad I made that decision. I loved it and ended up graduating May 2003 in Commercial Arts and graphic design. I spent 7 hours a day 5 days a week in front of a computer learning about design elements and software programs. It really paid off because I've been a designer in Wichita for the last year and a half. Unless I win the lottery I don't plan on continuing school. I hated working part time jobs and eating Roman noodles. College I explained most of my story in the school bio. Heres a little more info. Since I've graduated I have had about 7 different roommates. Some of them have been tough. I'm glad I can afford to live on my own now because I havent had the best of luck. A couple of them were alright, but we all have moved on. I had a house across from the girls dorm in Hutch, but I got in a fight with one of the guys and I moved out. Then I let this one guy move in and he drove me crazy by watching BET all day and smoking in the apt. I hated that. I kicked him out. Its been a long 4 years with lots interesting people. ter. After graduation from high school, I transferred to a store in Hutchinson while attending school. There a met the most wonderful people. The customer service team was like a family to me. We had work parties all the time and did some crazy things. I am still friends with all of them, but most of us are doing better things. I tranferred again to another Dillons store in Salina. Boy was that stressful. The people I worked with hated me because I was younger and new more. I guess I get that a lot. I finally cut the cord between me and Dillons in April of 2002. I had 4 years with the store and it was a really good school job and helped me get through school. I quit because I felt like I wanted to do some new things. I didn't want to be a lifer there. I had some jobs I wanted to work before getting out of college. It sound crazy, but I wanted to work in a mall and also in a factory. The mall job was supposed to be fun. I was way wrong. Some of you may have seen me in Waldenbooks in Salina. I wasn't proud of that job in paid me pennies, but It made me love Dillons. Over the summer of 2002 I worked at Certainteed in McPherson. I worked 11 pm to 7 am M-F for a couple of months. If you haven't finished school and want a reality check on what you might have to do for the rest of your life then I recommend trying it. I knew that I needed to stay in school or this might be it for me. So now onto my current work life. In July of 2003 I got hired on at the Coleman Co. (you know the lantern and coolers) as a graphic designer. I love it. I really was taking a chance by applying there with no experience. It turns out that out of 25 applicant's my portfolio stood out. I had a website at the time which was really cool, but not anymore. I'm currently working on a new one. So now with the experience I have I am looking at different locations to enhance my career. I am really proud of what I've done so far. In fact if you go to Walmart or Target I garauntee you'll see my artwork on some packages. I can only hope that I will progress and become a leading designer.
