Brian's Story
Life
Although I spent my childhood and college years in upstate New York, I was born in Washington, DC. We visited the DC area with some regularity when I was young. When I finished my Masters I looked for positions in upstate New York and metropolitan DC. I eventually accepted a position at the University of Maryland, and moved here while my girlfriend, now my wife, finished her Masters at the University of Paris. She joined me here upon her return, and we have lived at various addresses in the Maryland suburbs ever since. We have an adult son, and an adult daughter.
School
As a child I moved a lot. I began school at Pearl Street Elementary in Sidney, NY. At the end of 2nd grade I moved to Gloversville, NY where I attended Boulevard Elementary. I then moved to Syracuse, NY where I attended Edward Smith for 6th grade, then on to Bellevue Junior High, and H. W. Smith Junior High. I graduated from Thomas J. College
I started undergraduate studies at SUNY Binghamton, but transferred to SUNY Oswego where I graduated in 1974. After 3 uneventful years as an English teacher, I enrolled in a full time masters program at SUNY Albany where I graduated in 1979. I took a job at the University of Maryland and began part time doctoral study which I finished in 1988.
Workplace
I held a number of jobs as a teen including newspaper delivery, shoe salesman, truck driver, janitor, and waiter. My first professional job was as an English teacher. I left to work on full time Masters study, leading to 10 years as a university administrator. I obtained my PhD in this field while working at the University of Maryland.
I subsequently left higher education to work in the field of financial planning, where I help people with insurance and investments. I became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER in 2011 and now serve as president of Maple Tree Financial.
