Brian's Story

Life After graduation I worked in Alberta for a year and a half. I returned to Weyburn to retake 1 semester of Gr 12. I then went to the U of Regina.. In 75, I hitchhiked to Gander and took a flight to London. Within 4 hours of landing in London I had gone through 3 IRA bomb scares so I caught the next ferry to Calais. I discovered a L'arche Community for the mentally, emotionally and physically handicapped. I stayed and worked as a volunteer at this community for about 2 weeks. I then moved to a sister community in Brussels, where I stayed until Dec 75 when I returned to Calgary and then moved to Halifax to run a company for my older brother. In Dec 76, I returned to Calgary where I worked for a moving company until I returned to fulltime studies at the University of Calgary in Sept 77. I got married in March 78. We had 4 sons, who are now 25, 23, 20 and 18. In the summer of 78 I went to work for Cominco in Calgary. In January of 79, I worked for an oilfield chemical supply company. In Jun 80, I quit to work as a corrosion technician for BP Canada in Calgary. It was with BP that I first really started to develop my expertise as a corrosion specialist, publishing several papers in microbiological corrosion and computers in the corrosion industry. I left BP in 84 and went to work for Husky Oil in Lloydminster. I decided to finish my degree and started taking correspondence courses from the University of Waterloo. I finally graduated from the U of R in 88 with a B.A. in Math. In 90, I was offered a 1 year contract with a company in Libya, where I stayed until 97 working 9/3 rotations. My father passed away from throat cancer in Calgary in 93 and my wife filed for separation in 94. In 96, I was diagnosed with adult AD/HD. This was a defining moment in my life as many of my idiosyncrasies that defined my personality from an early age, but made me a difficult person to like and understand, were finally clarified and explained. From that point on my life started to improve significantly. My wife had filed for divorce in Feb 97. In Nov 97, I left Libya. In Jan 98, I traveled to Hong Kong and China. It was there that I first became interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine. I began studies in this field in Calgary and returned to China for 2 weeks in Oct to complete my studies. I was also doing some consulting as a corrosion engineer for some companies in Italy during this time. Also during 98, I spent a lot of time learning more about adult AD/HD to the point where I became an expert in one AD/HD chat-room. It was here that I met Lisa who is a high school counselor in Miami and had gone to the chat room to g...Expand for more
ather more information about AD/HD. We talked literally every day for the next 6 months. After about 5 months, Lisa decided it was okay for us to meet in person, but wanted to meet on neutral territory. I had a contract to put on a course in Rome in Nov 98, so I invited her to meet me there instead and she accepted. After 1 week in Rome, it was time to go home and she invited me to come down for Xmas and I have been here ever since. Lisa and I were married in Miami in Jan 01. It was necessary to return to my old job in Libya in Feb 00. In 03, during the SARS epidemic, Libya closed its borders to many countries, including Canada and the USA, to prevent SARS from entering their country. I was lucky enough to be out when it happened and had almost 5 months at home. During this time, I decided to get computer certified. I acquired a MCAD certification as a fallback position for when I left Libya again. Lisa and I decided that it was time for me to come home and stay home. So I again resigned my position in Libya and came home in Dec 03. I have been consulting as a corrosion engineer since. Besides being a world-class expert on oilfield corrosion, I have developed several training courses in the field. I have also developed 2 major software programs for the corrosion industry and for guidance counselors and have written a book on AD/HD. 2010 update. I have 4 grandsons through my second oldest son (13, 11 and identical twins 6). I have been working as a technical writer for various software and financial companies in the Miami area since 2005. Currently, I am working for IPC which is a Subway Franchisee owned purchasing co-operative for the US and Canada (28,000+ stiores). We are developing a new POS (point of sale) software that will work in all 33,000+ stores in 94 countries. Earlier this year an invention I came up with for the oil industry hit the market through RCS, a California based manufacturer and marketer of corrosion monitoring equipment with worldwide exposure. They sold the first 10 units in May 2010. I am also working an new pipeline pig to help control corrosion in large inch oil and gas transmission lines. The downturn in the economy in the US has hit us hard. My wife Lisa, a high school guidance counselor, has not had any significant work for the past two summers and I was laid off for six months last year, but we are recovering and still on our feet. We both do volunteer work for Safe Schools South Florida which provides training to educators and other adults about the need for safety for GLBTQ students. Lisa has been an advocate for these youth in the Miami-Dade school system for 17 years.
