Brian's Story

Life Hello everybody, Most of you will probably remember me best from Brookhaven or Tuffree rather than ElDorado since by that time I was a bad boy and ended up in ElCamino Real for missing too many classes. At 16, with Mom in tow, I joined the Navy on their delayed entry program and was scheduled to go in right after my 17th birthday but first I had to be tested. I didn't have a high school degree and only finished the tenth grade so the recruiter didn't have much hope that I would become much more than a Boatswain Mate. I took the ASVAB which stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. To everybody's surprise, including me, I scored so high I was pretty much given any choice I wanted. I chose the advanced electronics field where I went to various schools for about the first 18 months of my Navy career learning all about advanced radar and weapons systems, (Missiles/Guns/Radar). I had only planned on staying in for the initial 6 years however plans are meant to be changed. I stepped onboard my first ship, the USS America, CV-66 out of Norfolk VA in January 1984. This was just the first of four ships. The USS Paul F. Foster DD-964 was next followed by the USS Nimitz CVN-68 and the USS John C. Stennis CVN-74. I have been fortunate to have visited far too many places to list here without putting you all into a coma from boredom so I won't even try. I retired as a Fire Control Chief Petty Officer in October 2002 after nearly 21 years of service and quickly landed my first "real" job at ITT Industries, Gilfillan Radar Division in Van Nuys, CA. The family then packed up the house and headed to Lancaster California where we moved into our brand new 2700 sq ft house. After about 4 years there I took a new position at ITT Communications Information Systems division in Colorado Springs colorado as the Logistics Manager where we build satellite systems for the military. Colorado proved to be quite the culture shock to me and my family so after about two years I was looking to get back to sunny, and warm, southern California. Luckily our house had not sold so we were able to move right back in. I was not only able to go back to ITT Gilfillan in Van Nuys but also I was promoted to Integrated Logistics Support Manager. I am married and we have gorgeous twin 12 year old daughters, Elizabeth and Rebecca and 2 four legged children, (dogs), Dakota (German sh...Expand for more
epherd) and Shiloh (Black Lab mix). Some of my hobbies include playing with my girls, computers and cars. My newest vehicles are a 2006 Chrysler 300C Hemi which I have started to modify, and a 2001 Honda GL1800 Goldwing. I have finally finished my BS in Business Management degree and now I am turning my attention toward my Executive MBA. I think the hardest thing is watching time fly by so fast. I realize the calendar says I should be a certain age however I still feel like a kid. I love to joke around, go skiing, boating, run around with my kids and dogs, and even watch a good animated movie now and again like The Incredibles. I truly do believe that you are only as old as you feel and you only feel old when you sit back and let life blow by you. My family and I love to cruise and just finished our 8th cruise. This time it was on the Disney Magic. Now that we have returned to Lancaster California we have started back up at our old church, Grace Chappel. Our girls are also going back to Desert Christian school into the 6th grade as Jr High schoolers, WOW! I hope to hear from all of my old friends and acquaintances. Take care and God Bless, Brian Military I first joined the Navy on 28 January, 1982 in the Delayed Entry Program. I began Boot camp on 18 May, 1982 in San Diego CA. After Boot I attended Basic Electricity and Electronics school in San Diego, CA. Then I was off to Great Lakes Ill to attend Advanced Electronics, Phase 1 and 2. After that I went to Mare Island CA to attend NATO Seasparrow Missile system maintenance training. I got my first sea going orders to the USS America CVA-66 out of Norfolk Virginia. I served about 2 years onboard when I received orders to the MK-23 Target Acquisition System Radar School once again in Mare Island, CA. Then it was on to the USS Paul F. Foster DD-964 out of Long Beach CA. After 2 1/2 of the worst years of my career I was finally granted release and went on to be an electronics instructor at Mare Island CA. After 3 years I got orders to the USS Nimitz CVN-68 out of Bremerton WA. I spent nearly 5 of the best years of my career onboard the Nimitz before getting orders to staff duty for the Commander of Naval Air Force Pacific Fleet. After 3 years I got orders to the USS John C. Stennis, another nuclear powered Aircraft Carrier out of San Diego. I did my last tour at Fleet Technical Support Center, Pacific Fleet.
