Brian's Story
To borrow a line: What a long, strange trip it's been.
After high school, I bounced around a bit. Big surprise there. I got a job working for Rich Kerwin's mom, and stayed there a couple of years before heading to Carbondale. I hear there's a university there somewhere, wouldn't really know from personal experience. Around 1982, decided to get serious about life and moved to Minnesota. It took til 85 to get back in school, and til 86 to run out of money for the University of Minnesota. Fortunately, I did pretty well there. Went back to Chicago, worked for Mrs. Kerwin for a while again and ended up at the Univesity of Chicago with a scholarship that made it quite affordable. I barely made it to the top 10% of my class there, but when you consider it is U of C, that ain't bad. From there, it was on to Medical School at Rush, then a Neurology residency in Iowa followed by Psychiatry the the Medical College of Wisconsin.
So, there I was, an MD with two residencies...Expand for more
behind me and still no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was divorced by this time, and stuck around the Midwest because that's where my kids were. Always wanted to move to California, though, and finally did in 2005. My younger kids are grown, and I have one grandson so far. I also have a 3 year old daughter, Cassidy, with my current wife, Michelle. She is an incredible source of joy, as well as being quite a handful. With the housing crunch here, we find ourselves stuck in Lodi, while I am currently working in the east bay. I've bounced around a bit with jobs as well, but have found a home in Alameda County where I am the Lead Psychiatrist for Criminal Justice Mental Health. I just couldn't fit in in the University setting or Kaiser (big California HMO), but CJMH keeps things interesting enough for me.
Of course, there is a lot more to the story than that. This is just the highlights. Always happy to share more with anyone who cares to listen.
