Byron Bruce's Story
Left St. Cyprian's for St. Anthony's Seminary, which I got thrown out of for 'intellectual arrogance' in my junior year. Finished up at St. John Bosco where I lettered in football (and turned down a full ride to USC). Joined the US Navy Reserves, went to boot camp, came home and did two years of college, so that when I went into active duty I was a journalist on an aircraft carrier. Then I got thrown out of the Navy for much the same reason (intellectual arrogance, and I smacked an officer -- but he hit me first). Went to work at Jack-in-the-box, ended up a company trainer and opened New York. Then my mother called and said she was going to Alaska. I gave notice and went along. I worked on the North Slope and learned to be a land surveyor. Worked also on the preliminary survey of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. ing Kung Fu San Soo. Got a Black Belt in 1979, and my master's (8th degree black belt) in 1998. Came back to Alaska when I escaped my first wife -- I married my 'dad,' a binge alcoholic I tried to fix her so she would fix me. Back in AK I worked at land surveying until the bottom fell out of the economy. Then I hired on at a local women's shelter to teach anger management for men. That was 1985. I'd married again (and that one lasted 23 years before it blew up). Got a Master's in Transpersonal Psychology. So, from 1985 until now, I've worked as a counselor and kung fu instructor... So, I have two step-kids and four bio-kids. They all seem to be doing okay despite the somewhat rough upbringing they had. The last one is 16, and when I get her raised up I think I'll spend winters scuba diving in Mexico and summers fishing in Alaska, while I write books that will probably be best sellers after I'm gone....
