Bruce's Story

School As a Marine brat, I moved around a lot in my elementary years. I started school at Holiday Hill in Jacksonville, then left in the 3rd grade for Oklahoma and Michigan. It was good to finally move back to Jacksonville for 5th grade through 12th. Maybe my experience as a military dependent helped me make it easier on my kids as I dragged them around the world with me in the Air Force. Jacksonville was always my home. Enjoyed high school, but wasn't heavily involved with activities, maybe I should've been. Average student who tended to sleep in class a lot, especially the excruciatingly boring communism vs americanism class. My electronics teacher in 12th grade was inspiring, maybe that's why I've been working with electronics and communications systems ever since. College 1977-1979, United Electonics Institute in Tampa. Shared a boarding house with three other students. Earned Associates Degree in Electronics 1981-1991, Community College of the Air Force. Earned Associates Degree in Electronics Systems Technology. Combination of military technical, leadership and management training, plus a few courses from University of Maryland. 1987-1995, University of Maryland European Divison. Earned Associates in Computer Science. Took classes at all my bases in Europe. Workplace Winn Dixie, Hillsborough Blvd, Tampa. Stocked shelves to earn tuition money. Store is a Sports Authority store now. Service Auto Parts, Tampa. Delivered auto parts, took care of warehouse and mixed car paint. Earned money for tuition. Northern Telecom, West Palm Beach. First electronics job. Tested and repaired circuit cards at a plant manufacturing telephone switches. I only worked there for about 6 weeks. That area of FL is expensive to live in! LaMee the Florist: Couldn't find a good electronics job back in Jax. Best friend helped get me a job as a delivery driver. Had fun driving all over town, but had to move on and join the Air Force. A friend talked me into it. He got out in his first hitch. I turned out to be a lifer. You can see most of my military work related history in my military bio. Now that I'm retired, I'm letting my hair grow out a little, but not too much. My first job was for a company called S4 where I did a technical analysis of the data center on Scott AFB. Now, I'm with BAE Systems as a Long-Haul Telecommunications Systems Analyst for the Air Force Communications Agency on Scott AFB. They can talk about us, but they can't talk without us! Still in the AF, but in a different uniform (suit), and supporting our troops! Military July 1981, reported to Lackland AFB TX for Basic at the ripe old age of 21. Graduated basic with two stripes as an Airman First Class. Went to Sheppard AFB TX for technical training as a telecommunications systems specialist and teletype technician. Honor graduate from technical school. In Feb 1982, I reported to my first duty station at Ft. Monroe VA. I worked as a teletype technician and maintenance job controller in a tactical radar flight. Deployed to Saudi Arabia while at Ft. Monroe. After Ft Monroe, I went...Expand for more
to Hellinikon Air Base in Greece in Jul 1983. Worked as a teletype technician at various locations in southern Greece. I got promoted all the way to Staff Sergeant in Greece. Met my wife Sandra there too. From Greece I went to Eglin AFB FL in Jan 1985 where I worked as NCO in charge of teletype maintenance in a tactical air control squadron. I made another jump overseas fin Dec 1986 rom Florida and went to an electronics security squadron at Hahn AB in Germany where I worked as NCO in charge of maintenance control over a large comm-electronics maintenance complex. Made Technical Sergeant at Hahn and my first daughter Sarah was born there in Apr 1988. From Hahn I went to RAF Alconbury UK in 1991 and was in charge of the operation and maintenance of a small communications center supporting the U-2 aircraft reconaissance mission. I was promoted to Master Sergeant here, and my second daughter Karen was born in Oct 1991. From Alconbury, I went to RAF Chicksands UK in Dec 1992 where I worked as Chief of Maintenance Control overseeing maintenance of systems supporting a large operations facility. In Dec 1995, I reported to Bad Aibling Station in GE where I was in the position of Deputy Chief of Systems Maintenance overseeing a team of 75 contractors maintaining systems on the station. I also was instrumental in the replacement of the cable TV system in the housing area, and learned how to build radomes and climb antenna towers. My third daughter Heather was born at Bad Aibling in Oct 1996. After 12 years straight in Europe, I returned to the states in 1999 reporting for duty at McGuire AFB NJ as a superintendent of a deployable communications unit supporting satellite communciations and secure/non-secure voice and data networks at bare-base installations in austere locations. Promoted to Senior Master Sergeant at McGuire. In Jul 2004, I went to my last duty station in the Air Force, Scott AFB IL, where I was the Command Secure Communications Systems Manager responsible for several major communications systems and modernization of cryptographic equipment supporting them. I retired from the AF at Scott AFB in Oct 2007. I will stay in this area until at least when my daughter Karen graduates High School, then I'm willing to relocate somewhere else. My decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (3), Joint Service Commendation Medal, AF Commendation Medal (3), AF Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, AF Organizational Excellence Award, AF Outstanding Unit Award (11), AF Good Conduct Medal (9), National Defense Service Medal (2), Global War on Terrorism Medal, AF Oversees Service Long Ribbon (5), AF Longevity Ribbon (6), AF Professional Military Education Ribbon (2), Small Arms Expert Ribbon (2) and AF Training Ribbon. I've worked in or visited Greece, Germany, England, Scotland, France, Italy, France, Belgium, Austira, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Korea as well as a good many states in this great country. Member of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, Air Force Sergeants Association and the Air Force Association.
