School
High School was as miserable as college was exciting -- I'm not sure I was happy either place, both were times of angst and insecurity, but at least after high school I was on my own and had to learn to take responsibility for what happened. I do count myself (and those of my generation) extremely fortunate to have been going to school when we did -- when life was about what was going on around us rather than about "me." From JFK being assassinated when I was in elementary school and King and RFK being killed during high school, to the Vietnam years transcending (now that we know the history) all my school years, our shared experience up through Watergate was rich with history that wa...Expand for more
s about so much more than our individual lives. I got to shake Bobby's hand the day before he was shot, I marched in peace demonstrations and spent a night in jail over a civil rights demonstration and was an organizer (local only) for the first Earth Day so many years ago now. A memory that stays with me though from these years is not about politics directly, but of a group of friends gathered one evening(probably drinking wine), several having guitars, and all of us singing those simple folk songs of the sixties we weren't embarrassed to sing back in those golden days. We were together, sharing a time, no one dominating, all of us merely a part of a whole, and we were happy being together.
