Bruce's Story

Life It's hard to believe I have been out of High School for nearly 20 years already. Most of my post high school life has been work related. Actually I am glad I haven't married or had children yet, since I have that to look forward to someday. I concidered getting married to a girl I dated for nearly six years, but we had decided to wait until I had established myself in the computer field and she finished medical school. I broke it off since she would not relocate to MN, so the marrage never happened (actually neither did the official engagement). We do remain good friends to this day, allbeit from afar. As I say in my work profile, I currently work for Military Sealift Command, which is sort of like being in the Navy except the pay is better, there's no shore duty and I'm civilian. Currently I work as a Systems Administrator on the USNS Alan Shepard (T-AKE3), which is a new Louis and Clark Class ship designed to resupply Navy ships at sea. Last year, I went to Spain and Sicily. I travelled through the Straight of Gibralter; you could see Spain on one side and Morroco on the other, very cool. I plan to return to the Mediterranean later this year for a few months. I have 9 years left in what I call my ten year plan. I am here because I plan to buy a couple homes, save some money and go home and get married. I haven't decided whether I want to have children yet. At this point I think I would rather enjoy all 16 of my nieces and nephews, whew! and travel around the world with my wife someday. College * 1995 - 1996, I attended Miramar College in San Diego for Flight Operations. I had over 100 landings in Cessna 150/152s, over half of them solo. I stopped flying due to lack of money after my f...Expand for more
ather died. * Aug 98 - Oct 99, Attended Coleman College for Computer Engineering Technology. * Mar 00, Received CompTIA A+ certification (PC Technician) * Nov 00, Received Microsoft Certified Professional certification. * Apr 04 - Jun 04, attended Fire School as a requirement for Military Sealift Command employment (teaches shipboard fire fighting and damage control, etc.). * Dec 04 - May 05, Attended several classes for Radio Electronics Technician. Workplace After leaving the Navy in 1993, I had several uninteresting jobs. I finally went to college in San Diego in 1998 for Computer Engineering. I earned a CompTIA A+ Certification and Microsoft Certified Professional. I worked at Akamai Technologies as a Systems Administrator and really enjoyed it. It was one of those really nerdy places where you find lots of techno geeks. Unfortunately the company decided to close down the San Diego site, bummer! I worked as a Systems Administrator at Kalypsys, which is a biotech that does drug discovory using robotics, definately bleeding edge technology. Currently I work for Military Sealift Command where I work on shipboard computers and communications equipment. I travel about 10 months out of the year. Last year I went to Spain and Sicily. This year I went to the Middle East and then to Crete, Sicily, Spain before returning to the USA. I guess it's a good thing I like to travel and I haven't formed any permanent attachments, yet. Military I joined the Navy in 1987 after high school and served 6 years as a Hospital Corpsman. Stateside I worked in the hospital/clinic environment in Psychiatry and as an EMT. Overseas in Okinawa and the Philippines I worked in the field supporting the Marines.
