Cal's Story

Life I joined the Coast Guard in 1976 thus embarking an a very succesful 21 year career. Since my retirement from the USCG, I was a travel consultant for a short while and then a Buyer/Inventory Manager. In 2005 after a couple lay offs, I returned to the federal government as a contract employee for the General Services Administration (GSA) in Seattle. I filled this postion until GSA created a new Purchasing Agent position which I applied and was selected for. On July 6th, 2010 I took the oath of office returning me to Government Service. I have 3 children. A daughter (30) and son (29) from my first marriage. My wife and I have a 12 yr old. Music is still a major part of my life. I sing tenor in a barbershop quartet called Chord of Honor. I miss my friends and have the News Review bookmarked and look at it frequently. I would love to hear from others from the great class of 74 and any other RHS alumni. School My high school years are among my fondest memories. At the top are the many activities centered around music. Performing in the A Capella and Swing Choirs including The Jester Harriston concert in 1973. The December trips to Salem and Portland. Then there were the Musical Productions of "Annie Get Your Gun", "The Sound Of Music" and "Oliver". Of course the fun would have been greatly diminished if I didn't have the friends to enjoy it with. It was great seeing many at the 30th reunion a couple years ago. Would love to connect with many others. Drop me a line. College I was among the first to enroll in the new Music Department at UCC. Mr. Anderson was a great music teacher. I did ...Expand for more
not stay in school long enough for a degree as I entered the U.S. Coast Guard in January 1976. Workplace After retiring from the Coast Guard, I made a career change to the travel industry. Wrong fit. I then became a buyer/inventory manager in the electronics industry. When the economy soured after 9/11, I went through some lay offs. In September of 2005, I assumed a position with Portland Habilitation Center as a contract employee with the General Services Administration (GSA) as a procurement tech. On July 6th of 2010, I took the oath of office for an appointment as a Purchasing Agent with GSA. With what I have experienced since my retirement from active duty, I am more than happy to return to service with the federal government. Military Joined the U.S. Coast Guard in January 1976. After 21 years and 5 months, retired from active duty in June 1997. Duty Assignments sent me to the states of Wisconsin, Florida, California and Washington. During my career, I was assigned to 4 ships accounting for 1/3 of my career at sea. Places that my ships have sailed includes all 5 Great Lakes, The Saint Lawrence Seaway, Guantanamo Bay Cuba, Bahamas, San Diego, CA, Oregon and Washington coastlines, Gulf of Alaska and the Bearing Sea, Russia, Panama Canal, Carribean, and Haiti. Favorite Assignment is a toss up between the CGC Fir in Seattle from 1979 to 1982 and my final assignment as Chief of Contracting for the 13th Coast Guard District in Seattle. Least favorite assignment was Group Key West Florida from 1982 to 1986. I had a very good career and am proud to have served my country. Cal Philppi CWO3 (Retired)
