Cara's Story

Life In 1992 I graduated from William Paterson College (now it's William Paterson University) in Wayne, NJ with a B.A. in Communications. Worked in publishing full-time for Ablex Publishing and Lawrence Erlbaum Associates (LEA) as a Production Editor until mid-1995 when I moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming. While looking for full-time employment, I spent my time as a freelance copyeditor for both Ablex and LEA. Even after I secured a full-time job with the State of Wyoming I continued to take freelance editing jobs with Ablex and LEA, and also added Prentice Hall to my list of clients (I proofread books for them). My state job is with the Wyoming Highway Patrol, in the Communications Center, and I've been there since 1996. January 2, 2008 marks my 12th year. In 2002 I was promoted to Dispatch Supervisor, and at that time I decided to concentrate on my new position and declined any further freelance jobs. I married Don in 1998 in Cheyenne and our closest friends and family--many from NJ--were there to celebrate with us. The ceremony took place at Grace United Methodist and the reception was held outdoors at Little America Hotel. We own our own home and have four dogs: two Shelties, a beagle, and a Chesepeake Bay Retriever. Besides my husband and "fur babies," my interests/passions include the New York Yankees and the Colorado Rockies, mystery novels, British comedies and classic comedy teams (Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, the Marx Brothers, Dean & Lewis, Lucille Ball), Egyptology, cooking and gourmet cuisine, traveling, Mozart, target shooting (I own a Smith & Wesson), and spending time with friends and family. I have a 22-year-old stepson and a 3-year-old stepgranddaughter. 2008 will mark our 10th wedding anniversary and we plan on taking a special vacation to Alaska to mark the event. We both have gone through some rough times recently with our health, so that's another reason why we want to get away and celebrate. I want to proudly say that February 2008 will mark my 1-year of being free from the disease endometriosis, after suffering from it for over a decade. School Sad to say, I couldn't stand high school: Too many snobby, superficial people who were just down-right cruel. I mean, seriously, in hindsight: Did it really matter what kind of clothes someone wore or what purse they carried? How about someone's CHARACTER? HELLO-O-O! Anyway, that didn't stop me from having fun with my loyal and kindhearted group of friend...Expand for more
s. We may not have been in the "popular" crowd or been on the cutting edge of fashion or "coolness," but we did have a bunch of friends who were from all different races and creeds and we made each other laugh a lot. Most importantly: We weren't afraid to laugh at ourselves and didn't take things too seriously. My only hope concerning those who were prima donnas back in those days is that they've grown up since then and realize the error of their ways. I'm more than willing to hear from you if this is the case. Otherwise, don't bother to read any more of my info. Ciao. College I loved William Paterson! Everything that high school wasn't, college was. I met a lot of great people who I still am friends with today. There were no "clicks" and I fit in with everyone and had friends in every class. I majored in Communications and minored in English. Of course, my favorite classes were in those two areas--journalism, editing, American literature, etc. Two weeks after graduating, I landed my first publishing job in Norwood, NJ. Workplace My work history is pretty much outlined in my previous Life Bio, but here's a quick recap: 1992-1993: Editoral Assistant for Ablex Publishing 1993-1994: Production Editor for Ablex Publishing 1994-1995: Production Editor for Lawrence Erlbaum Associates (Ablex's top competitor) 1995-1996: Freelance copyeditor for Ablex and Lawrence Erlbaum 1996-2002: Dispatcher for the Wyoming Highway Patrol 1996-2002: Freelance copyeditor for Lawrence Erlbaum (Albex was taken over); freelance proofreader for Prentice Hall 2002-Present: Dispatch Supervisor for the Wyoming Highway Patrol Besides being a supervisor, I also assist with the hiring process (we typically hire twice a year): testing, interviews, and background investigations. In 2003, myself and another supervisor created a group of dispatchers to help with morale within the Center. The group is dedicated to recognize those who go above and beyond in their job duties, celebrate milestones (anniversaries, retirements, birthdays), and to organize fun activities. For example, in 2007 we hosted a kick-off-to-summer barbecue and a "Rocktober" potluck to celebrate the Colorado Rockies going to the World Series. I am a member of the Wyoming Peace Officers Association (WPOA) and the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO), which is an international organization. I also hold an amateur radio license (AKA "ham operator") with the FCC.
