Carey's Story
Life
Well, after moving around every 2-3 years of my life, it looks like I'm settling down for awhile. My wife Elizabeth and I moved to Calgary in 1997, we have three little cowgirls now, and a border collie. We bought a house in Halifax earlier this year that we plan to move into eventually, but it looks like we'll be renting it out for the next 10 years or so, until we move back to Nova Scotia. We'd prefer to be closer to family in Nova Scotia, but the money is in Calgary right now.
I just bought a new motorcycle a few months ago (Yamaha R1 for anyone interested), and just this past Easter weekend I managed to crash it while racing down in Salt Lake City. It's fixable, but still a bummer. I'm ok though, just a scuffed elbow. Not bad for a 130mph fall.
Workplace
Wow, work. My first job out of University (Carleton U, by the way) was as a delivery boy, delivering and setting up brass beds and mattresses in Ottawa. I then joined the Navy, and went out to Chilliwack (BC) for Officer training. The military life didn't agree with me (and vice versa), so I stayed in Chilliwack for a year and returned to Ottawa. I worked at CIBC for about a year and a half, and then got tired of that and went back to school. Algonquin College in Ottawa. I got an honours diploma in Technical Writing, and that's what I've been doing ever since.

n worked for a company called CML, that did telecommunications work with 911 and aircraft control systems. They were both in Ottawa/Hull.
I then followed my heart to Halifax, and got a job with a company called ProGraph, who created an object-oriented programming language for Macintosh computers. Unfortunately, that company went under three months after I got there. So, my next job was in Moncton, working for ACOA (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). I was there for a year and a half, while my wife (my girlfriend at the time) was finishing medical school in Halifax. We got married in 1995, and moved to Boston to finish off her medical training at Boston College. I worked at a comany called Shiva, also a telecom company, located just outside Boston.
After two years, Elizabeth graduated, and she got a job offer in Calgary. So, we packed up and headed across the US to Cowtown. Shiva was taken over by Intel, and they kept me on contract for another two years after I moved to Calgary. Just to keep busy, I started doing some local contracts, ranging from companies like General Electric and Shell, to Aquarium Professor and Book4Golf. It's been interesting.
I'm currently working for some oil and gas companies in Calgary, working myself in semi-retirement. I'm typically working 30 hours a week during the summer, and I teach some motorcycle racing schools to keep me occupied the rest of the summer. Life's good.
