Carey's Story

Life I joined the AF after high school. I've been stationed in IL, NY, FL...and now TX! I have travelled extensively through western Europe and most of the US. Recently sold my home in Florida and with my husband purchased another in the Hills of Austin. Happily married for three years to my best friend. Workplace Served in the Air Force for almost ten years: four active duty and the rest in various versions of the Air National Guard. Separated in early 2003 to move to Austin, TX where I sub-contracted until I was laid off. Contracted again and recently hired full-time at Temple-Inland, Inc. Military I went to BT in Nov 1994 at Lackland AFB, TX. Went to WX Tech School at Keesler AFB, MS until April of 1995. From there I had a permanent assignment at Scott AFB, IL. From there I went TDY to San Vito dei Normanni, IT and also a short stint to Bahrain. I separated AD in Nov 1998 and started an ANG assignment at NEADS in Rome, NY. I went to ALS at McGhee-Tyson AFB, TN from Jan 1999 to Mar 1999. I went back to Tech School at Keesler for Computer Programming from Mar 1999 to Jun 1999. Worked in NY for a few months and went TDY Jan 2000 to Tyndall AFB, FL for 60 days where I applied for a position with 1AF/CONR. Started my ADANG position at 1AF in the Network shop in Mar 2000. s supporting NORAD, SEADS, NEADS, ANR, and WADS. The general for 1AF/CONR was one of only two individuals authorized by the President in 2001 for the option to shoot down aircraft should the need arise. 9/11 was a very stressful time period for my unit. It took about two hours on an average day to get onbase due to security restrictions. Military spending was ridiculous to meet needs that were now outlined in the name of Homeland Security. As for personal effect, our PA officer's own brother was in Building 2 when the second plane struck. He had called ten minutes before the jet hit. Adam Arias was one of the first bodies found in the excavation of Ground Zero. It was obvious from survivor stories that Adam's past experience came to the fore: a New York City Fire Fighter at Engine House 19. The job stress and the changing needs of the AF were making morale very low and interpersonal relationships very strained. When my future husband's activation was at an end, he asked me to move to Texas to be with him. How could I say no? For a short period of time I was involved with the Air Reserve at Fort Carswell. In December of last year I decided to go on IRR as it appeared to stay active was to sign papers to Iraq. Sadly, over nine years of service to my country appears to be the end of my commitment.
