Carl's Story

January 20, 2009 Hi All, Have you heard the one about the snail that got robbed by two turtles? When the police asked, "What happened", the snail replied, "I don't know, it all happened so fast". I guess my perspective is the same as the snail's, as I write, I wonder, where did the last 40 years go. lol So, Is this a trip down memory lane or what? Okay, what have I been doing since high school? Lived almost an entire life! lol In short, married once, loved many times, had three boys, finally took education seriously and graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a B.S. in Business Administration, emphasis in accounting/finance (ha, ha, yes, business does include a healthy share of BS). Spent a career buried in taxes, which in addition to honing tax prep/audit skills, presented opportunities in public speaking (tax law/policy), teaching, time on "The Hill" lobbying congress for a national labor union, and meetings with foreign dignitaries. Just retired, and am told I've successfully reverted back to age 22 - I'm working on getting back to 16, so figured I'd checkout this website. lol Since retiring, I'm enjoying Oregon, live in a small town country setting just south of the home of the UofO, so, there is no shortage of culture and diversity, as well as the serenity of a country getaway. Volunteer at the UofO, helping business majors acquire hands on experience preparing tax returns during the tax season. Several friends are UofO alum, well I think I can call them friends unless Cal is playing the Ducks, then at least one of them becomes a sworn enemy - really, you know the type, ex UofO cheerleader, green blood pumping through her veins, has webbed feet, ruffled feathers - a Duck! Of course, you know what bears do to ducks, along with those little red birds (cardinals), yes, they eat them! Lol The area also has a growing "Napa Valley" (i.e. vineyards/wineries) with award winning pinots, situated close by an unbelievably beautiful coast that rivals California's. Scattered among the wineries are a growing number of sustainable farmers, who sell their bounties at local public markets. We even have a Trader Joe's and plans to add a Whole Foods, and you thought Oregon was "the sticks"! lol Live close by lakes and slopes, so, working at becoming a ski bum - hey, it's a lot of work at this age, requires one to stay in shape. Have time now to dig out the guitar and actually learn to play it, along with the ...Expand for more
piano/keyboard and exploring digital photography, love the creativity it offers compared to 35mm. Also pursuing a few political activities, worked on the Obama campaign, getting involved in small town politics (just like DC, only smaller), and continuing congressional (mostly fed) lobbying efforts. Now is a great time to get connected online with the new administration and tell them what you do/don't want to see. You know that "junk" you learned in history class about, "We the People"? Well, it's true! A vote, a phone call, a letter, an email are all powerful tools, can't believe how many people don't use them to benefit their lot. Then, with all my free time, lol, I'll tackle the "to do" list around the house and dream about travel. But then, having lived in the Bay Area for 45 years, experiencing many cultures, travel isn't a big priority for me - I'd rather buy the boat and live life where I am than be the tourist standing in line - although, hmm, somewhere tropical, say an out of the way location on the Mexican Riviera, does sound inviting. For the Cal alum. Yes, I am the one who received my son's birth announcement during Langios' Econ lecture, thanks for the standing applause - my son, loves to hear that story. And, does anyone know the name of the bakery that was on the corner of Hearst and Euclid between 1982 & 1986? I've spent a significant portion of my life searching for a comparable blueberry muffin! lol Went back several times since, but, new owners and NOT the same muffin. Oh yeah, just a word of caution for current students, don't go living on Blondie's Pizza and Top Dog, just because all the food groups are represented, doesn't mean it's a healthy diet. Recognize many names in here; have kept in touch with a few over the years, but most not - guess we get wrapped up in our hectic immediate lives and lose track. Sure would like to see more profiles filled out and if you're active on this site, try to get other alum signed on. So, if any of you remember me or not, drop me a note. Forgot to mention, yes, the alien photo is real. I set up the camera on a tripod to take a pic of the rodie in bloom, snapped the shot, looked up and there it was, so quickly snapped another. Yes, I did meet the alien, drank a beer with him, but couldn't understand a word he said. I think he signed something about, it's not too late to make it a better world, but we all have to contribute something. :)
