Carl's Story
I am currently a college professor, singer, and stage director. After High School, I went to Oberlin College and got a Bachelors in Music History. I went to Germany my junior year and met composer Gian Carlo Menotti and assisted him with productions of his operas in Munich and Spoleto, Italy. After finishing my degree, I worked at the Santa Fe Opera and then did an apprenticeship at Juilliard which led to one at New York City Opera. Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. During this time, I served as artistic director of Chamber Opera Chicago, and eventually at Chicago Opera Theater, Chicago's #2 company. While all this was going on I began to learn to sing, and eventually went back to school to get a masters degree in vocal pedagogy (Northeastern Illinois) and a doctorate in vocal performance (Northwestern). I am now Director of Opera and Associate Professor of Voice at Western Michigan University, and I sing, direct and consult for Opera Naples in Florida. For the last two summers I have also been employed by the Bay View Festival in Michigan.
