Carl's Story

Lets see..where to start? When I was in Biloxi I was one of the Keesler AFB kids. My Dad liked the coast and we lived there 3 times. Kindergarden through 3rd grade. then moved to Massuchusetts..then back to Biloxi 5th and 6th grade and then off again to Oklahoma and back again to Biloxi in 9th grade where I stayed through high school. I was kind of a loner I suppose. My best friend was Chris Toth. Baseball was my favorite sport. I pitched and Chris played CF. Danny Elliot was my catcher. I remember one particular game vs Notre Dame where Ferris came running out screaming to the mound to ask what in hell we were doing. I had noticed a beautiful young lady in the stands cheering for me, Lou Anne Love, and was merely asking Danny if he knew her....I did pitch two no hitters my senior year at BHS!!! But Ronnie Farris was a tool. He was such a Biloxi homer and hated the Keesler kids. I fondly remember the girls at Biloxi I lusted for but was too shy or uncool to approach like Joanie Kennedy, Vicky Zybinski (one year older but we used to climb trees in her backyard as kids), and others like Lou Anne Love whom I did approach. I wish I could have gotten to know guys like Mike McDermott, Danny Elliot (friend from 1st grade), and Hank Berumen, alot better as it turns out later on in future reunions we had alot in common. I remember singing Jingle Bell Rock with Hank which surprised him considering I had just come from getting licks from Coach Beaudron in shop class (If the Good Lord's willing and the Crick don't rise) because I got into a fight with some little punk named ?Newman who called my a Yankee and threw sawdust in the fan so it kind of tarred and feathered me. I got in three or four pretty good shots before we were separated and that kid never bothered me again. I worked out at the base after school bagging groceries at the commissary. Made enough money there in 4 hour shifts 5 days a week to pay for my gas money and my entire tuition for four years at Ole Miss. My sister Linda (BHS 74 now a Nurse Practioner in Nashville), brother Eric (BHS 79? a doctor with five kids in Anchorage), and Jeff (BHS Class 82? - an engineer/computer guy in Baltimore with new twins) all worked at the commissary throughout high school. Other fond memories. The once beautiful Biloxi beaches with piers out in the water before Camille hit in 69. Mrs Horner who taught both English and Latin to me, Linda , and Eric. Diagraming sentences. eeew. I went to Ole Miss and roomed with best friend Chris Toth (he left after one semester and went to USM). Roomed with BHS 74 Tim Menius and became best friends. We all lived in an apartment off campus after first year and studied and partied while trying to keep our living arangement with our girlfriends hidden from our suspecting parents. Graduated in 77 with Engineering degree in Geology and married my college sweetheart Marie (Blankenship) from Jackson and moved to Houston to be in the oil business with Pennzoil. Still in it now although at times I wonder why I ever did that. Got divorced in 84 and remarried in 88 after moving to Corpus Christi (Ah livin' the beach life and playing the single guy to the hilt). In Corpus met my soulmate and playmate Bond Gideon, a model, singer and actress. Bond was Jill Foster on the soap Young and The Restless, Operation Petticoat and was in several other TV series. She convinced me to buy a 33' motorhome in 87 after Pe...Expand for more
nnzoil shut down operations and we traveled around the country for six months chillin' and contemplating what we might do next. And having more fun than two humans should be allowed to have.. After finishing MBA in Corpus Christi, I returned to Houston with a job with Ashland as Planning Manager for International Division and our beautiful daughter Victoria (Tory) was born. We were still waiting on completion of construction of a new home and were temporary living in that Motorhome. Funny now ..not then. We always remind her that Tory's first bed was a small closet. Later I became Senior VP of a Gemany company, Metallgesellschaft, and than Drilling Manager for Engelhard Corp that invested in oil and gas deals to complement their gas marketing operations. My office was downtown looking out over the ENRON building. I'm a big baseball nut still and into music and martial arts (tae kwon do) and play tennis 2 or 3 times a week to keep in shape. I grew a bit in college so I topped out at 6'4 although I think Im starting to shrink as I close in on 55. Damn. Like to play poker, watch sci-fi movies, and still read a comic or two for fun to stay a kid. I really like to travel and see new things. I love the smell of flowers and still really appreciate a beautiful long legged woman with a sense of humor and adventure and class. Been here for 20 years now.. WOW. I never lived anywhere growing up much longer than 3 or 4 years. Thats where I get my nomadic urges as every summer we take 4 to 6 week adventures. Some people spend their money on big houses or $$ cars. We spend our extra doneros on world adventure trips. We have been fortunate to have taken our daughter on several visits to places like Italy, France, Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic the Netherlands. Our most beautiful home away from home is in Murren Switzerland where my crazy 20 year old daughter Tory and my wife Bond e paraglided from 6000' off the Swiss Alps. So cool. Its nice to get a world perspective on things. Any suggestions for next trip? What now?.., I am an independent geologist and investor/deal seller in drilling deals for my own account and also manage a drilling fund which invests private funds looking for high return in drilling deals. This summer we are helping Tory record an album. She is a sophomore at the University of Texas in Austin and is double majoring in Business Honors Program and Radio-Televison-Film. She has become quite a good guitar player and singer.. Check out soem of her videos on Youtube (search Tory Tompkins for some songs she has recorded so far. Wife Bond just finished performing in the Texas Repertory Theatre's run of the Pulitzer Prize winning "WIT". So there is so much more but I have already gone on way too much. I still consider Biloxi my home town and have fond memories of our homes in Beauvoir Park and Ancient Oaks, walking to the beach, my first car, first girlfriend, driving my green VW Bug all over town, playing and listening to music on Keesler with the "Pingers", guys wearing wigs to school, short skirts, first getting drunk on Boonesfarm, and I will never forget the wrath of Hurricane Camille in 69. I need to locate my Yearbook. Its gotta be around here somewhere. Peace.. Carl Wayne Tompkins BHS 73 Best wishes to Keith Heard, Frank and Mary Heath, Robert Miller, Pete Barich and many many other friends from the BHS Class of 73.
