Carl's Story

Life I am from Burtville,La. and not many people know where that is but it's in East Baton Rouge Parish. Moved to Sunshine where I started 1st grade but completed mostly at home. Honor student up until the 9th grade. After that it was all Uncle Sam. Joined the Air Force before I finished school under the delayed enlistment program. Basic was cool DI of sister flight was from home,Uncle was NCOIC of the aid station where I recieved my shots. No, there was no favors but I was scared as hell because if I messed up I thought they would kill me. Any on to Tech School (Lowery AFB,CO)Relatives here as well.(NICE) On to McDill AFB,Tampa,Fla. Rattle snakes and gator infested. Tried to get out and go home since everywhere I looked was snakes or gators. Finally moved to the flightline(HAHA)Dream job. Attend UTEP on base for plans on being an FBI or polit but flunk dry flight school and later kicked out of the program for unbecoming. Longest paid and uncharged leave ever. Had an assignment for UK processed out of the base and went home from July 1,1976 until September 22,1976. Mcquire AFB where I found out I was going to Iceland now. So I stayed at Mcquire ran into Sgt. from home and now the party started. He gave me a going away party to ICELAND. Keflavik Naval Air Station fell on the runway getting off the plane knew I was going to hate being here. Processed in went to work the next day and the following day went to work and before lunch was in the Commander's office where he put a ticket in my hands and said I had 1 1/2 hrs to get on the plane. I asked no questions packed my bags and was out of there. (Well not so fast) The plane I am on nobody is speaking english nor is this plane from the US or even headed in that direction.Well I landed in Scottland a...Expand for more
nd they do speak english there but where am I going nobody here for me and I don't have another ticket so off I go into Glasgow for the night. Back at the airport now get searched and then given a ticket to London? Now what? Well I get there and nobody here either. Look on the board for the base I should be going to and it's not there so I decided I would go to Woodbrige since I can't find Welford. Exchanged so money jumped the bus to the train station. while at the station a GI asked me why was I in London in uniform and I told him I was lost and can't find my base. He said well I going to Upper Heyford so I decided well what else can happen. Signed in at the base and taken to my job the next day and what a big suprise. I am looking at the radar system on huge F-111 and was told this is the plane I will be working on. I deliver ammo to planes not work on them.(Well here we go again)Now I am sent to Greenham Common. There for another to weeks going back and forth to London to locate my luggage. Finally November 6,1976 I arrive at RAF WELFORD. Home sweet home. Now here I am not leaving and this was a 2 year tour so I stayed 7 yes 7 because I was scared to leave and go at the same thing all over again.England AFB,La.(JOKE)Pistol packing time now, motorcycle club and the works. Yes I sure did change. Now in the Army for a minute then NG,trucking, and back in the Army for Desert Storm. Not bad Fort Benning,Schofield,Presidio, and now the reserve.West Ark CC,trucking,in Ohio Reserve and from here on. Best time of it all was score keeping for the Welford/Greenham Pirates Basketball team, bartending at Greenham Common and coaching the basketball team. Being the road captain for the MID-Night Express M/C Alexandria,La and joing the VFW post#8852 calling bingo.
