Carmen's Story

Hello! I am Carmen (nee Kaselitz) Moore. I attended Clark Elementary School in Detroit, Mi. from 1946 through 1947. After Clark, I attended Bethany Lutheran School 1st through 4th Grades. My Grandfather on my dad's side was Organist/Choirmaster/Violin and piano teacher at Bethany but passed in 1930 before I got to meet him. His family always attended Bethany Lutheran. The only teacher I remember from Bethany is Mr. Brummer (who was my 1st and 2nd grade teacher as well as a neighbor on Nottingham in Detroit),. He had a daughter, Lois, and a son, David, who is now a Lutheran Minister (may be retired now). I remember Marilyn Uhl from Bethany. My parents transferred churches from Bethany to Peace Lutheran (Detroit, Michigan) when I was in 5th grade (1951). I was confirmed at and graduated from 8th grade at Peace Lutheran in June of 1955. The Teachers I remember from Peace are Mr. Baden, Mr. Franke, Mr. Bierwagen, Miss Paula Albrecht, Miss Arliss Zink, and the Principal, Mr. Walter Moeller. Students I remember are: Sylvia Bubak, Cathy Caruso, Joanne Cosentino, Betty Geibig, Barbara Zube, Jim Neumann, Marguerite Grahn, Steve Bernthal, Char-Rae Runstadler and others - can see their faces but can't remember their names. I attended Detroit Lutheran High School from September, 1955 through June, 1957. Friends I remember are: Sylvia Bubak, Cathy Caruso, Joanne Cosentino, Betty Geibig,, Barbara Zube, Jimmy Neumann, Marguerite Grahn, Bill Hoyle, Kay Kionka, Kathy Sommerfeld, Jerry Vanni, Roger Russman, and many others. I was a part-time chapel organist there but my friend, Kay, was far better at the organ than I. At my parents' insistence, I transferred to Grosse Pointe High School on Fisher Road in Sept., 1957 graduating June of 1959. Some memories are of singing in Acapella Choir in 11th Grade, playing in the Concert and Marching Bands (I played alto clarinet and occasionally flute), football games, modern dance classes. Playing at Band Day at University of Michigan. Envying the beautiful clothing of all the girls in my class. Being introduced to serious music lessons at the Detroit Institute of Musical Arts (piano, voice). It doesn't seem possible 51 years have passed since High School Graduation! I remember singing with "Make Way for Youth" on WJR radio, Wayne State University and Monteith College, Ballet classes with Severo and taking all the music classes and other classes at Wayne State University. I sang first Soprano and also many solos with the Detroit Lutheran Singers from 1969 through 1996. Oh such beautiful music we sang! I sang off and on with the UAW-CIO Chorus under Richard Huebner, U of D Chorus under Donald Large and The Kenneth Jewell Chorale under the direction of Erik Freudigman, successor to Kenneth Jewell. I married Bob Kynaston in 1961 - we divorced in 1965. In 1967 I married George Beverst (divorced 1995). Bob and I and his spouse, Lester, are still good friends. George Beverst sadly passed in February of 2007. In my spare time I also sang in the Detroit area, and also privileged to sing all around Germany, Switzerland and South Africa. I also substituted in the D...Expand for more
etroit area for various churches and German Choruses in the Detroit area. I also served as Organist for several Detroit-area Churches. I sang with the wonderful 8-voice, paid choir at Mariner's Church in downtown Detroit from 1982 through 1999. It was the best job I've ever had in my lifetime. If I could go back and sing with them again, I would. Their director, Kenneth Sweetman, was the ultimate in accomplished organists and also in choosing the best music for the group! I've had the privilege of singing under some fabulous conductors via The Detroit Symphony (Dorati, Tilson-Thomas, etc.)! I didn't give it a thought then as it was just something I did, but now I wish I could do it all over again right now. Through the years, I've kept in contact with Kay (nee Kionka) Townsend from Detroit Lutheran High School. Kay now lives in Lewiston, Maine and has 3 girls. Her husband is Richard. I have three children: Brian - a machinist at Daimler'/Chrysler - married to Michelle -they live in Redford, Michigan and have 4 children; Dan wholives in Clinton township, Michigan and works for Integrated Living., He's engaged to Colleen -no children; and my youngest child, Gloria, married to David. David and Gloria have one child, Claire (our youngest grandchild). Gloria works as Chief Internet in charge person as well as operates and manages all on-line things for Purina I. She lives in St. Louis, Missouri and commutes to Michigan on the weekend to be with her husband and daughter. In 1980 I went back to School and eventually graduated as a R.N. I am now retired (last position was at Bon Secours Hospital in Critical Care). I worked there from 1981 through 1998. I am (was) a lyric soprano soloist and played Clarinet and Flute in High School. In 1999 Gip (George) Moore and I married and I moved from Michigan up here to North Pole, Alaska. I said I'd never ever live anywhere colder than Michigan. Howevefr, it's a drier cold with much, much less humidity - so way more tolerable than Michigan in winter. I have many interests and several hobbies - reading, learning, crocheting, knitting, tatting, sewing (have made everything from baby clothes to a complete wardrobe for a Bride and attendants. I've also made men's suits (back when I had more energy than I have now LOL). I enjoy cooking a great deal, enjoy dabbling at painting, drawing and obviously love music. In addition to singing, I also play piano, flute, recorder, dulcimer (stringed, not hammered), the chanter of a bagpipe (a major challenge as the fingering is different from that of the flute and clarinet). I am currently attempting to teach myself Violin. I'm learning to make jewelry too. Have enjoyed learning the computer (no specialist, just like learning it). OK, I just have to keep learning! If I'm repeating myself --- chalk it up to age LOL. Two things I do that cause raised eyebrows is I reborn dolls to look like babies and Middle Eastern Dancing (Belly Dancing). I'm not the skinny kid I was in grade school, high school and college. I occasionally wish I was skinny ... ok I admit, it is a never-ending wish). What are you all doing?
