School
I was a transfer student from New York into the 10th grade at WCHS. The fun recreational events of drives to the beach, speedway motorcycle races at Irwindale Raceway, trail bike riding in the Villas, and the concerts - all these pastimes seemed to make school a little easier. I knew a lot of kids, from around my home, and through school. There was always something happening, and the 3 years until graduation went by quickly. I have lots of happy memories from the teachers and kids at WCHS. After all, it's the only time I was let out of school due to an earthquake day, how can you top that?
College
Claremont Men's College (now Claremont McKenna) was tough! Talk about wake-ups, these kids were the leaders of tomorrow, very competitive in high school, and even more so in college. I worked hard and made it through with something less than a B average, would have liked to have participated in more...Expand for more
activities, but I lived off campus, and worked in addition to school.
A summer was spent at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. to get extra credit I needed after transferring between different schools. Lots of great memories there, I love the D.C. area. When classes were over, I volunteered at Housing and Urban Development for a project related to historic preservation. Got to interview lots of project managers, and wrote a final report on how the HUD programs worked with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This would have made a great senior thesis topic, but I changed it to a topic more related to the legal profession.
Workplace
When my plans for grad school didn't work out, I fell back on one of the things I really enjoyed, and that was computer systems. This was around 1980, and big, hulking mainframes were the only game in town. I started with Digital Equipment Corp. PDP 11/70 systems, and went on to work with the full line of DEC computers. A job change got me involved with Data General systems, and then after that, IBM AIX RS/6000 servers. The PC boom had started in 1983, with the release of the IBM PC Junior and PC XT, and that has always been a hobby and work responsibility for me.
