Carol's Story

Since my days at SMH, I got married about 2 years after graduation and started my work with the US Government. I started a family of 2 daughters, Catherine and Donna, and one son, Dennis, Jr. After my son was born I worked only part time and stayed home. The rest of the time I tended to a family farm in Barker,NY. When the girls were in college and my son was in high school, I divorced my husband and started a full time career in Quality Assurance for a major food processor. I left that to go back to my passion of working with numbers. I became a night auditor and trainer for Marriott chain hotels in the Rochester, NY area. After many years I remarried to a wonderful man, Jim Hank. I then started my job with a local heating and cooling company as an office manager and accounting clerk. When the company closed its doors in 2006, I stayed home and became the full time care giver to both my father and my husband. They both finally ended up in the same nursing home where they died 6 months apart. I am now fully retired but still busy. I do volunteer work with two Senior Citizen Groups in the Avon area, and the Avon Food Pantry. In my other spare time, I tend to my flower and vegetable gardens and crochet caps for newborn babies for a local hospital. I also keep in touch with family members by traveling East, West and South. My daughters live East and West and my son and my late husband's family live South. When I married Jim I acquired . 4 step chil...Expand for more
dren, 13 grandchildren and now up to 14 great grandchildren and growing. When I am not doing volunteer work or traveling, you will find me on my computer making connections with relatives, friends and former classmates of SMH on FB or this site or just sending personal emails. In May 2012, I was recognized for my volunteer work and named Outstanding Senior Citizen of Avon for 2012 by Livingston County and the Town of Avon. I enjoy my volunteer work and feel humbled and honored to be awarded this award. In the next year, I have added the Foster Grandparents Program to my volunteer work. I work with First Grade and Kindergarten children at the Lima Primary School. It is fun, creative, rewarding and keeps me very active. I love it .My son finally married his girl friend of 17 years and I acquired a larger extended family with 3 grown grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. I had a stroke in 2017 but have almost completely recovered to full function. I am back to my volunteering and keeping up with my growing family. In January, 2021 in the midst of the Covid 19, I fell in my kitchen and broke my ankle. I spent 2 months in a rehab center in Leroy, NY before coming home with a large air cast on my ankle. I have been working with rehab at home and have finally gotten rid of that big cast. I am still taking it easy but am glad to be cleared by my doctor to ditch the cast. I am glad to be back to my crocheting for seniors and taking care of my gardens.
