Carol's Story
Life
I graduated from Upper Perk in June of 1989. After graduation my dad's job took us to Saginaw Michigan, where I worked in a outlet mall for a while.
After one very cold winter, I returned to my home town of Waynesburg PA ( 50 miles south of pittsburg) I worked as a nanny for a DA and his wife a school teacher. One day my boss came home and told me I needed to go to school, so she gave me the day off to go and apply to Waynesburg College. I was accepted and attened as a Psych major but could not seem to get through Statistics, so I transferred schools and began California University of Pa as a Social work major.
While attending I was nominated and selected to attend a womens leadership institute in Mercer County. Upon returning to school I was given a grant to do something to benefit my community. I was already certified as a domestic violence counselor and sexual assault counselor. I decided that I wanted to educate my school on Domestic Violence and the need in shelters.
I started The Barrel program where recepticals were placed in visible places and items for the shelter, and the women and children who go there would need. I then contacted the Nicole Brown Charitable Foundation and contracted with Nicoles youngest sister Tanya Brown to come to Cal U and do a speaking engagement to bring awareness to the issue of DV.
( Tanya is the youngest sister if Nicole Brown Simpson)
Ms. Brown came and I found a kindred spirit. Our first program was a major succes and we began doing more programs together.
I was California University's Woman of the Year in 2000. I graduated with a BSW in Dec 2000 and in May of 2003 I was awarded The 2003 partnership award by a social service agency in Washington Pa. I am the founder of The Womens Awareness Foundation. I also work as a MISA social worker. My clients all have mental illness and substance abuse problems.
I am currently living in a little town in Fayette County called Belle Vernon. I live with my cat Tig...Expand for more
ger, I have a niece and a nephew, whom I adore. I enjoy traveling and visiting with my friends.
I transferred to Upper Perk in 1987, it was a very lonely time in my life. It is now that I am in my 30's that I have found peace and I have never been so happy. I feel very lucky.
Please email me, I would love to hear from you.
Peace, Carol
