Carol M.'s Story

I was born and raised in Greenville,Pa. My family moved from Greenville on Sept. 30, 1963, to Canisteo, N.Y. My maiden name was Carol M. Moyer and I married my first husband, Carroll (Cary) T. Cartwright, on May 10, 1964, after knowing him for only 43 days. That was during the Viet Nam war days. We had three daughters, Cynthia, Cheryl and Chaunee, who were nine, seven and nineteen days old, when my husband was killed on June 21, 1974, in a freak electrical accident. Cindy has six children, five girls and one boy. Cheryl is a resident M.D., at the Cleveland Clinic, in Ohio. She is an Internist. Chaunee has four children, two boys and two girls and lives in the area. In 1977, I married my second husband, Charles P. Gardiner, (the biggest mistake of my life). We had a daughter, Caroline born on June 27, 1980, and divorced two years later. Caroline is now married and a high school French and Spanish teacher in Niskayuna, N.Y., near Albany. I am presently married to my third and final husband, Wesley E. Bentz, a retired chemistry professor from Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. He is originally from Spokane, Washington. Wes is a volunteer fireman at Alfred and an ambulance driver. He was one of many volunteer firemen who came to our rescue from three fire departments the night my first husband was killed, but I didn't meet him until almost a year later. Wes and I have a son, Daniel who was born on June 27, 1986. Dan recently graduated with an accounting degree from Alfred University and was on the Dean's List all through college. He graduated with a 3.69 GPA. He took a few years off to work after high school before deciding to go to college. I am so proud of him. He loves living in the country and all of our pets. Danny is great at keeping our computers running. He has been playing with computers since he was two years old, at his dad's office at Alfred University. He gradually got in to fixing and updating our computers, after he got his own computer first. Danny is extra special. It's nice having him living next door. We live on a hill in the country, seven miles from Alfred. I have been up on this hill since May 22,1964 and I love it. It's out in the middle of nowhere with nobody to bother us. We have deer come into our yard to eat grass and apples when they are in season. We have all kinds of wildlife here, including coyotes. We have six ponds. I love to go for walks in the woods. I worked over the years at my first husband's TV store, where he and his dad sold TVs and appliances and repaired them. A few years after Cary died, I went to work at two local hospitals in Hornell, N.Y. , working in patient registration and switchboard. I worked as a Census worker for a few months in 2010. I am basically retired now, but still do housework and taking care of our ten cats and one dog. Wes and I do volunteer work for the Red Cross Blood Drives in Allegany County. I am a disaster volunteer for the Red Cross. Clara Barton, who founded the Red Cross, lived thirty miles from here in Dansville, N.Y., which is fascinating. There is even a street named after her. We try to get back to Greenville to visit my Aunt Violet whenever we can. We had been going to visit my Aunt Mabel Pletcher in the nursing home in Meadville every few weeks, until she died in Jan. 2011, five d...Expand for more
ays before her 95th birthday, as well as visiting Aunt Violet. I learned through the ancestry.com web site that there were two English lords and a doctor in my family tree from the Axtell side of my mother's dad's family. My great grandparents on my mother's side were Hiram Adam and Florence Smith, so I have a lot of cousins I went to school with that I didn't know were my cousins until years later. On the Moyer side of the family were some Myers. The Moyers originally came from Germany, according to ancestry.com. I love to hear the sounds of summer: the birds chirping and the breeze blowing. I love the sunshine and to swing on my double glider swing in the back yard. If we hadn't moved away from Greenville years ago, I would probably still be living there. It has changed a lot since we moved. The house we lived in was torn down in 2010, and now there is just a plain lot where the house and garage stood in Mapleton. There is a Wal-Mart store within walking distance of where we used to live. The farmer's field behind our old neighborhood is covered in new houses. Greenville has changed a lot since 1963. My older brother, Ron Moyer, died on Dec. 27, 2009, from diabetes and a heart attack. That was a shock. He died eleven days before his 65th birthday. I would love to hear from any of my old friends. Update: March 19, 2019. My husband, Wes, and I haven't been back to Greenville to visit since July 2015. We have been busy at home with volunteer work, taking care of our 12 cats and two dogs, and being grandparents to our two newest grandsons, Our son, Danny, lives next door with his little family. Christopher Michael Bentz and Declan Thomas Bentz Christopher was born in 2017 and Declan was born in 2018, 13 1/2 months apart. They have the sweetest smiles and they love to see Wes and me when we visit and sometimes babysit. They are talking and love to watch Thomas The Train movies and have their own electronic tablets. The boys are my little buddies. We have fourteen grandchildren so far and five great granddaughters. My daughter, Caroline and her husband, Ed Bongio have a son, named Lucus, who was born in 2015, and a daughter named Brynn. I found out through an ancestry website that the Moyers are not German, but Irish. Their original name was MacMoyer and dropped the Mac from the name when they came to America. My daughter, Cheryl Lund, who was a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic is now an internist at a hospital in Florida. In 2016, I met a Dr. Paul L. Axtell at the Wellsville, N.Y., hospital, who has the same name as my Grandpa Axtell and he is an orthopedic surgeon and a relative of mine. That was fascinating. He told me that the first Axtell to come to this country was a guard to the king of England. We still live in the country and love it. This past winter has been cold, but it was worse three years ago. Spring is coming and I've been ready for it since the first foot of snow fell last Fall. We have studded tires on our cars to get up the hill when the weather is bad. We probably won't get down to Greenville again. I don't think there will be any more family reunions. The cemeteries looked more like family reunions the last several times we were down. I miss them all. Every year there were fewer family members at the reunions.
