Carol F.'s Story

Life [I would love to hear from you. Please e-mail me at cfmilazzo at yahoo dot com] I was raised in Bronx, NY, moved to San Juan in 1976 to connect with my family roots and to pursue medical studies. There completed pediatric residency training and 4 years active duty at Roosevelt Roads Naval Hospital. In 1987, I moved to Omaha, NE where I worked in a few community clinics and taught at Creighton Univ. and Univ. of Nebraska Medical Schools. I have resided in the Sacramento, CA area since 1999, where I work in a solo medical practice and am active in ministry in my local church and community. I enjoy reconnecting with former classmates and acquaintances. School On the Coindre Hall memorial web page, I recognized the posted picture of Brother Leonard, taken in 1967. The students standing behind him are Peter Robinson '67 (on the left) and myself. Here are some reflections on our experiences at Coindre Hall based on recent encounters with former classmates: Coindre Hall left a indelible impression on those who attended. Among the students we had some non-conforming or emotionally troubled youths placed there for "reprogramming." Some had parents who could not or would not invest the time to raise their youth at home. Some were placed there to rescue them from an abusive home environment. Some thrived in that structured environment...others were terrorized by the physical violence used to enforce conformity. Certainly, some religious brothers were devout and motivated by true Christian love. Others suffered serious emotional suppression and psychopathology. The setup was perfect for some faculty members to victimize students. In retrospect, I wish that there were more insight into the issues of faculty and students at the time. In the early 50's my parents moved from East Harlem to the northeast Bronx. I appreciated their financial struggle and sacrifi...Expand for more
ce to allow me the opportunity to study at Coindre Hall. For this reason I did not divulge the embarassment, the bullying, the sexual advances by a classmate and the social isolation that I experienced there. I felt no credibility, no support and no opportunity to safely discuss these issues. I am thankful for acquiring study habits there that allowed my academic success at Regis High School and in my later career. College My years at Fordham were a time of social isolation, loneliness, crisis, questioning and a search for meaning. Neither human philosophy nor mystical cults provided the answer. I finally listened to the Gospel message with an open heart and the Jesus that I had learned about as a child at last became real to me. I surrendered my life to Him except for my inner insecurity. I was too afraid to reveal that to anyone, even Him. I really believed He would despise me. That's what others' cruelty and prejudice had led me to fear since my early childhood. After graduating college, the Lord opened the doors for me to attend medical school. Here, I met regularly with a Bible study group where I grew spiritually and then started attending church again. I became active in music and youth ministry. I believed that I could disguise my insecurity through prayer and living (by "faith") according to what others told me were God's expectations for me. I fell victim to an abusive relationship that nearly cost my life. Thankfully, the Lord rescued me to joyful fulfilling service in His love.
