Carolyn's Story

Life My family and I live in Riverview, Southeast of Tampa. I have three children, three dogs and a husband. We're in that stage of life where we operate at a frenzied pace; constantly busy with various activities, and it seems as if we are forever on the go; we work hard, we play hard. I have had a career in travel for 20 years, now, plus I write on a freelance basis. In travel, I am transitioning from being a traditional travel agent to full time meeting planner. I’ve been in travel management, but these days, it’s a hard business. As for writing, I am a freelancer, writing on a variety of subject matter, including travel, but a whole lot more. I write for a community newspaper in my area, plus I write for magazines and websites. I have several books knocking around in my head, by seldom have any time available to commit to capturing them. I also stay involved in our community. On a personal note, I have been sober since 1987. My eldest son, Michael, is 14. He is becoming a man before my eyes. He enjoys fishing more than anything else that life has to offer, and plays baseball at his high school. He plans on becoming an engineer of some sort, but in what discipline, he is undecided. Michael is very reliable, and is becoming a stronger person on whom I can rely to help out. He is growing into a young man of whom I am very proud. My younger son, Donald, is 12. He also plays baseball, (AAU & LL), races motocross and loves his XBox. I'm still waiting for him to grow-in many ways. He is cute, charming, and naturally gifted. He loves negotiating, enjoys being waited on, and pursuing the finer things in life. He is undecided what type of tycoon he will become, but he knows he'd better choose a good field, because the lifestyle he wants doesn't come cheap! He swears he will take care of me in "suitable fashion" when I am old. My daughter Jacqueline is 11 and she makes parenting easy, (of course, my parents would have said the same when I was her age-12 is another story). She rides & shows horses, and is very good at it. She is very smart and does quite well in school, (I expect it to stay that way!). She loves to be the mother hen to her brothers. Jackie wants to follow in my sister's footsteps to become a veterinarian. She is true joy. All three of my children plan to attend UF. I have been married for 15 years. My husband, Mike, grew up in South Tampa and graduated from Plant High School in 1979. Although he lived in Tampa, his family owned a landmark business in Seminole. Surprisingly, he was very much what we have called a jock, when I was in school. He was a star football player, all the way from youth rec. leagues up to the NFL, (didn't make it out of training camp, though). He is now in insurance, and is a devoted father and husband. Together, we love horse racing, and other equestrian activities, and summering at our family summer home in Maggie Valley, NC. We are a very close, strong family and spend all of our time together. We all love dogs and horses, and boating. We expect to retire to a sprawling horse farm, in Ocala. In the meanwhile,...Expand for more
our lives are about working, playing, making money and spending money. Although my father died in 1991, my mother still lives in Pinellas, in Five Towns. My brother is also living in Pinellas, though he ruined his life when he became the fourth husband of Kim Krysko, (SHS 1983). Unfortunately, I have nothing good to report for him, (if you're charitable-say a prayer). My sister is still my hero. She is beautiful, successful, self-made, very strong and glamorous. She is my best friend. She lives in Palm Beach and has a successful veterinary practice there. Workplace Work life... wow, what a long, strange trip its been! I've often refelected that, after getting my first job at 14, I never stopped working. How depressing. No wonder I'm I'm ready to retire! Who remembers Chief Charley's? What a place! I loved being a part of the Chief Charley's family, though I hated that AWFUL Jr. Hostess job. High School work was restaurants, restaurants, restaurants. Let's see, started at Chief's, then the Kingfish, there was the Omaha Cattle Co., Gregory's, oh, so many! Hostess, cashier, waitress-YUCK! I think one of my favorite jobs was working onboard the old Veracruz- a rust-bucket cruise ship that sailed from Tampa in the winter and in New York & Canada in the summer. That was pretty fun, though I drank way too much. I got to visit a lot of new places. I've also spent a lot of time in retail. That wasn't too bad. Finally, I landed in travel-which was always my intention, (foolish girl!). I started at a smal mom & pop in Clearwater, worked at Singer Travel in Seminole, Travel Center in Belleair, then I temped while I was making babies... Worked at Cypress Travel & Palm Travel (Palm bought Cypress) in Tampa. Then I took a while off as a mom-just a couple of years. I also got my real estate license during that time. It seemed like the natural thing to do. My whole family was in real estate, (My mom was A DYNAMO in the 70's and 80's). Alas, to make any money in real estate takes time & money-two things that run my life and I never have enough of. I let my license go, and went back to travel. Then there was First Travel in Tampa. That was a good agency, and I really enjoyed working there. Unfortunaetly, that's about the time that travel became a nearly-futile business for small agencies. After that, I fumbled around for a little while, before going to Motivano. That was agreat position, but doomed from the start. It was an Internet start-up, and every week, there was a lottery to see what heads would roll. My position was not key to the company... What next? I temped again, more as a consultant on a few special projects. Finally, I landed at MVI in Tampa. I've been here for four years, and mostly enjoy it. I have a great relationship with my boss, and seem to be the "heir apparent", come July. Time will tell. All the while, I have often worked two or three jobs. I started writing professionally in 1999 as a sideline, and have done that ever since, off and on. I have always enjoyed writing, and wish I could it make it my full-time career.
