Carrie's Story
Life
My husband, Rob, and I both teach at Merrillville High School (history and English, respectively) and have a golden lab, Hampton, who is six (Yes, he's named after Dan Hampton from the Chicago Bears)and a mutt named Hayley, 1.
In addition to teaching, I act as Key Club advisor. Last year I became a certified teacher mentor and was named to Who's Who Among America's teachers for the 2005-06 edition. In 2007, I was named Most Outstanding Key Club Advisor for Indiana.
In my spare time (ha!), I am involved with the Merrillville Breakfast Kiwanis, act as a Site Coordinator for Kiwanis International's Key Leader program, and am on the advisory boards for Key Leader, Spring Mill Health Campus, and the Lupus Foundation of Indiana. I can be seen in the Kiwanis Key Leader promotional video that has been distributed internationally. I guess that you can say I'm an international movie star, of sorts. Ha! I recently became a certified doula and enjoy assisting parents during the birthing process. My husband and I love home improvement projects, and purchased a cottage on the banks of the Tippecanoe River that is very near completion. You are all invited to come float, party, and relax at our inagural Winamac bash in August. I love to travel and recently took a road trip to meet long lost relatives. I'll be travelling to Scranton (Yes, of The Office fame) at the end of July for a family reunion with the Brady Clan. Another passion of mine is throwing parties. I love celebrations! I've been having a great time planning our 20th class reunion and hanging out with all t...Expand for more

School
There were several teachers who inspired me: Mrs. Shirley Rhody, Mrs. Shirley Gronlund, Mrs. Eulene McKenzie, Senora Shinovich, and Mr. Jay Gephart. Each of them was kind, caring, and went above and beyond for their students. I would like to think that I have a bit of each of them in my teaching style.
Crush, hmmm...there was that drummer.
I have many fond memories of high school, however if I had to do it over again, I wish I was who I am now, then; I was sooo shy back then. My students don't believe me when I tell them that I was, but I am much more outgoing today than I was then. I wish that I would have let people see the real me along time ago!
College
My first year of college I lived with a recluse. After that I lived with four other girls and still keep in contact with two of them. College at IU was awesome. My husband I are both IU graduates and actually became engaged at Showalter Fountain in May of 2000. Rob played rubgy at IU and his coach, also a minister, married us at Memorial Opera House in Valpo on August 11, 2001. College is where I really bloomed and blossomed. My husband and I meet up with college friends in B-Town often. It is a place where I still find inspiration.
Workplace
I LOVE teaching at Merrillville High School. It is truly a place where one can make a difference. I also work with some pretty phenomenol people. Work is a place of much fun. I feel like I never left high school...well, technically I haven't.
